Adjustment of trendy, gaming and less assimilated tweens in the United States
Youth transitioning from childhood to adolescence (tweens) are exposed to increasing amounts of media and advertisement. Tweens have also emerged as a major marketing segment for corporate America with increasing buying power. We examine how tweens relate to popular culture messages and the association of different orientations to popular culture on adjustment. A secondary data analysis was conducted on a marketing survey of 3527 tweens, aged 10-1…
Islam and the West
I am very honoured to deliver this year’s Sternberg Lecture. Sir Sigmund Sternberg is not only a very good friend and colleague but a man I very much admire; not only for his human qualities, but also for the distinctive and wide-ranging contribution he has made over many years to inter-faith collaboration and harmony at both national and international levels. He is one of the most perceptive and persistent men I know; perceptive, in his eye for …

Publius—A Split Personality
This article critically examines the widely accepted thesis that because of basic theoretical differences between Hamilton and Madison the Federalist is best read as the product of a “split personality.” An examination of the areas and concerns identified by leading proponents of this thesis (Douglass Adair and Alpheus T. Mason) fails to reveal any significant differences between Hamilton and Madison writing as “Publius.” In fact, this analysis r…

Separation of Powers and the Madisonian Model
This article critically examines the commonly held proposition that Madison advocated separation of powers as a means of thwarting majority rule, or, conversely, of protecting identifiable minority interests. Rather, Madison's chief purpose in advancing the doctrine of separation of powers–one which was shared by the majority of his contemporaries–was to prevent governmental tyranny whose characteristic feature was seen as arbitrary and capriciou…

The "Intensity" Problem and Democratic Theory
Dinner is over. Mr. and Mrs. Jones and Mr. and Mrs. Smith are having coffee. The question arises: What shall we do this evening? Play bridge? Go to the movies? Listen to some chamber music from the local FM station? Sit and chat? Each, in due course, expresses a "preference" among these four alternatives but with this difference: Mr. and Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Smith, though each has a preference, "don't much care." Their preferences are "mild" or "m…
The Regional Interpretation of Manhattan Population and Housing Patterns through Factor Analysis
IN VIEW of the primacy of New York City among American cities, it is perhaps surprising that relatively few geographical studies have been made which attempt to interpret the distribution of population groups and neighborhoods in the core of this urban area. One obstacle to such an interpretation may well be the very amount and complexity of the accumulated census-tract and planning-department data dealing with Manhattan alone. It is bewildering …
Social Justice and the City
Factorial Ecologies
The utilization of factor analytic methods in the investigation of the spatial structure of urban areas has raised several methodological concerns. Two of these issues are examined in this study: the validity of the orthogonal model, and the possibility of bias through boundary drawing. This paper thus focuses on the effect of the choice of rotational technique upon the derived factor structures at three levels of metropolitan delineation-metropo…

Educational and Demographic Factors in the Urban Geography of Washington, D.C
Social patterns in the nations capital are explored through the factor analysis of a set of demographic data and a set of educational data for elementary schools. The demographic factors highlight racial division and ghetto expansion along the fringe of Rock Creek Park and indicate additional class polarization within the Negro population. These broad trends are counterpointed by the presence of blight of centers of higher education and of areas …

The Basic Symbols of the American Political Tradition
The Basic Symbols of the American Political Tradition
When it was first published twenty-five years ago, this classic work of political theory gained notoriety because neither its approach nor its interpretations readily fit into any of major schools of thought dealing with American political tradition. More significantly, its arguments challenged core tenets of what had become received wisdom concerning roots of our political beliefs and institutions. Willmoore Kendall and George W. Carey argue tha…

Songs of Jack Tar in the Darbies
SHIPBOARD LIFE FOR THE COMMON SAILOR in the eighteenth century held a dearth of pleasures. Accommodations were dingy, damp, and crowded; clothing was inadequate, and the food barely tolerable. If one were unfortunate enough to ship with a hard mate or captain, the miseries were no doubt compounded. Then, too, there was the simple matter of danger: a misstep in the rigging at night in a bad sea, an untoward wave washing the deck without warning mi…
