I add my voice to this growing tradition with a story about the discovery and treatment of a soft tissue sarcoma in my thigh, chronicled in a journal I kept over many months. We examine how the concept of narrative has entered social work over the past 15 years, with special emphasis on research applications. Approaching our task from distinctive standpoints and locations, the article reviews definitions of narrative, criteria for ‘good’ enough narrative research, and patterns in social work journals. The article notes some problems with the prepositional discourse of research ethics that is dominant in the West, and joins the call for an ethics-in-context approach in the human sciences. Using detailed examples from my fieldwork in South India to develop a narrative about ethical conflicts, I explore the problematics of informed consent, confidentiality and other concepts central to research ethics in the USA. The idea for this Special Issue was born over dinner in a Greek restaurant. It was 2001 and each of us had just presented our work at a conference on narrative-based medicine in Cambridge, UK, sponsored by the BMJ. Aspects of a social setting profoundly influence personal experience in the setting. The purpose of our study was to further understand the phenomenon of ward atmosphere through a detailed case study. One narrator describes and contrasts two ward experiences, one where she lost her mother through death, and the other where she became a mother through birthing. Case studies have a valuable place in health research, including the increasingly popular illness narrative. In a thrice-told tale, I analyze and compare the performance of identities in two illness narratives, men with multiple sclerosis whom I interviewed in the 1980s. Drawing on fieldwork and interviews from South India (Kerala), the author analyzes married women's experiences of stigma when they are childless and their everyday resistance practices. There is an inevitable connection between reduction -our need to simplify and order-and representation -our dependence on words and images to stand for what we see and feel. Using divorce as an example, I examine the consequences of three forms of representation and compare what we learn from symptom counts, from lists of marital complaints, and from narrative accounts of mar-riage. While descriptions of the effects of chronic childhood illness on the family appear in the literature, there have been few attempts to develop a formal measure of this impact.
