Parental Preferences for Sex of Children in Canada
The Caribbean Migrant Farm Worker Programme in Ontario
The authors describe a program sponsored by farmers in Canada to import seasonal agricultural workers to Ontario from the Caribbean and Mexico. "On the basis of survey data obtained in 1987, this paper focuses primarily on levels of earnings and characteristics of individual participants. Some comparisons are also made between the Ontario programme and one in Florida which also involved temporary West Indian labour." (SUMMARY IN FRE AND SPA)

Nuptiality and fertility in the Dominican Republic
Women in marital unions had more live births than those in consensual unions. The relationship between cumulative fertility and the number of fertile sexual unions is positive for the early childbearing years and negative for the later ones. "The purpose of this paper is to examine childless women and the different socio-demographic characteristics associated with this demographic pattern. The study focuses on the proportion of ever-married and currently married women 15 years of age and over who were childless in 1971. This paper examines the role of emigration in the recent fertility declines which have occurred on the island of Barbados. Barbados with a history of over two centuries of out-migration has experienced in the period 1951–1970 very significant migration loss. In 1851-61, the crude birth rate in Canada was 45. In 1972, it was approximately 16. In 1967 a sample of 600 patients from the Population Council Research Project an affiliate of the Barbados Family Planning Project yielded 461 interviews of selected women patients. 12% had never used contraceptives 2.6% had never been pregnant. 7.8% had no partner or husband. 74.3% of the women who did use a contraceptive method had utilized the IUD. 33.8% used the IUD to space pregnancies while 54.1% wanted no more pregnancies. Regression analysis is used in examining the cumulative nature of contraceptive use among clients of a family planning programme. Markov chain analyses are performed on the data. χ(2) tests are used to test the stationarity of the transition probabilities from the state of user to non-user as well as from non-user to user over the period of operation of the programme.
