A Re-exploration of the Relationship between Types of Sex Unions and Fertility
The Barbadian Case

Data from a national sample of 4199 lower socioeconomic status Barbadian women between ages 16-50 were studied to assess the relationship between fertility and the type of sex union. Cross-tabulation and multiple regression analysis were employed to assess this relationship. Findings from this study replicated earlier field research on other English-speaking Caribbean islands. Fertility was found to be highest for women in married unions next highest for those in common-law unions and lowest for women in visiting unions i.e. women living with their parents or on their own but maintaining a sexual relationship with a man. Comparison differences were greatest when performed between women in visiting and women in nonvisiting unions. The structural component in the situation which makes married and common-law fertility similar is the matter of common residence thereby facilitating more frequent sexual relations. Fertility was not found to increase uniformly with age within each of the 3 sex union types. Responses to questions concerning contraceptive practice showed that 2/3 of the women currently involved in a sex union had never practiced any form male or female of contraception
