Processing the Gender Star Form in German
The German gender star is a form of gender inclusive language that uses an asterisk to merge masculine and feminine role noun endings (e.g., Choreograf*in, ‘ choreographer inclusive ’). It was created to counter the male bias of masculine forms intended as generic and to represent all genders more inclusively. This study examined how role nouns with the gender star are processed in written and spoken German using a semantic priming paradigm. In E…
Who said it? Native and non-native listeners' source memory for object-speaker associations
Memory for who said what can help native and non-native listeners identify critical information for use in conversations. In two experiments, source memory for object-speaker associations was tested for listeners varying in language proficiency. Native and non-native participants of English first heard speakers name objects with prototypical color (e.g., broccoli) before they had to indicate who had previously named each object. Speakers either c…
Investigating the effect of nativeness and speaker age on the credibility of spoken sentences
Previous studies found mixed results regarding a bias in credibility ratings for trivia statements made by L2 speakers in comparison to L1 speakers. Perceptual fluency, social attitudes, and pragmatic lenience have been proposed as underlying causes for the bias. The present study examined credibility ratings for L2 speakers and extended the scope of the investigation by adding the factor age of the speaker. In the present study, German native ad…
What Fires Together, Wires Together
This study investigated the processing of lexical elements of idioms in isolation. Using visual word priming, spreading activation for idiomatically related word pairs (e.g., pop-question) was compared to that for semantically related (e.g., answer-question) and unrelated word pairs (e.g., trim-question) in two experiments varying in SOA (500 ms and 350 ms). In line with hybrid theories of idiom representation and processing, facilitatory priming…
Spoken Word Recognition in Bilingualism
Recognizing spoken words in one's first language (L1) is usually effortless, but the same task can be much more demanding when listening to a second language (L2). In order to decode the message of a speaker, listeners must recognize individual words in the speaker's utterance. Spoken word recognition involves two central processes: (a) multiple word activation and competition and (b) segmentation of the continuous speech stream. One major challe…
Activation of Literal Word Meanings in Idioms
How the language processing system handles formulaic language such as idioms is a matter of debate. We investigated the activation of constituent meanings by means of predictive processing in an eye-tracking experiment and in two ERP experiments (auditory and visual). In the eye-tracking experiment, German-speaking participants listened to idioms in which the final word was excised ( Hannes let the cat out of the . . .). Well before the offset of…
Nacionalidade Na Imprensa E No Rádio
Este artigo estuda a regulação da nacionalidade no rádio e nos jornais, buscando interpretar seu efeito sobre a política de línguas nesses veículos. Para tanto, ancora-se na Análise de Discurso de linha francesa e na História das Ideias Linguísticas no Brasil. O corpus de análise envolve a legislação para os meios de comunicação promulgada durante a Era Vargas (1930-1945). O trabalho discute como a política para as nacionalidades resultou em uma …
Context and Literality in Idiom Processing
In a self-paced reading study, we investigated how effects of biasing contexts in idiom processing interact with effects of idiom literality. Specifically, we tested if idioms with a high potential for literal interpretation (e.g., break the ice) are processed differently in figuratively and literally biasing contexts than idioms with a low potential (e.g., lose one's cool). Participants read sentences that biased towards a figurative or literal …
Learning to Comprehend Foreign-Accented Speech by Means of Production and Listening Training
The effects of production and listening training on the subsequent comprehension of foreign-accented speech were investigated in a training-test paradigm. During training, German nonnative (L2) and English native (L1) participants listened to a story spoken by a German speaker who replaced all English /θ/s with /t/ (e.g., *teft for theft) or they produced the story themselves with the t-substitutes. During test, participants made auditory lexical…
Automaticity and Stability of Adaptation to a Foreign-Accented Speaker
In three cross-modal priming experiments we asked whether adaptation to a foreign-accented speaker is automatic, and whether adaptation can be seen after a long delay between initial exposure and test. Dutch listeners were exposed to a Hebrew-accented Dutch speaker with two types of Dutch words: those that contained [ɪ] (globally accented words), and those in which the Dutch [i] was shortened to [ɪ] (specific accent marker words). Experiment 1, w…

Spoken Word Recognition in Second Language Acquisition
In order to decode the message of a speaker, listeners have to recognize individual words in the speaker's utterance.
When One Person's Mistake Is Another's Standard Usage
How do native listeners process grammatical errors that are frequent in non-native speech? We investigated whether the neural correlates of syntactic processing are modulated by speaker identity. ERPs to gender agreement errors in sentences spoken by a native speaker were compared with the same errors spoken by a non-native speaker. In line with previous research, gender violations in native speech resulted in a P600 effect (larger P600 for viola…

Finding Referents in Time
In two eye-tracking experiments the role of contrastive pitch accents during the on-line determination of referents was examined. In both experiments, German listeners looked earlier at the picture of a referent belonging to a contrast pair ( red scissors , given purple scissors) when instructions to click on it carried a contrastive accent on the color adjective (L + H*) than when the adjective was not accented. In addition to this prosodic faci…

Assimilation Violation and Spoken-Language Processing
Previous studies have shown that spoken-language processing is inhibited by violation of obligatory regressive assimilation. Weber (2001)replicated this inhibitory effect in a phoneme-monitoring study examining regressive place assimilation of nasals, but found facilitation for violation of progressive assimilation. German listeners detected the velar fricative [x] more quickly when fricative assimilation was violated (e.g., *[bIxt]or*[blInx n])t…
Help or Hindrance
Four phoneme-detection studies tested the conclusion from recent research that spoken-language processing is inhibited by violation of obligatory assimilation processes in the listeners' native language. In Experiment 1, native listeners of German detected a target fricative in monosyllabic Dutch nonwords, half of which violated progressive German fricative place assimilation. In contrast to the earlier findings, listeners detected the fricative …

Lyotard's Combative Theory of Discourse
“Parler, c'est agir” is an old rhetorical commonplace. Speech is generally regarded as an instrument of communication and understanding. Lyotard, however, wants to replace communication with agon; to him speech is a contest: “parler est combattre.” He emphatically rejects the humanist notion that language is in a state of harmony disrupted only by the speakers' opposing interests. For Lyotard, the idea that individuals control language is an anth…
