Relevant for the academic discipline or relevant for the future job? German preservice teachers’ views on academic mathematics
In university settings, preservice teachers engage with academic mathematics while simultaneously preparing for future teaching roles. Highlighting the relevance of content to future job responsibilities can positively influence preservice teachers’ views on academic content. This study investigates whether preservice teachers’ perceptions of a specific content differ when its academic relevance versus job-related relevance is emphasised. Using a…
Half a mathematician? How preservice teachers are connected to their studied discipline
Preservice teachers study an academic discipline (e.g.mathematics) andjust like students majoring in that discipline -have a certain level of connectedness to it.While studying, students may compare themselves to peers studying the same discipline within alternative degree programs, characterized by different study contexts.Notably, preservice mathematics teachers may engage in such comparisons with major mathematics students, potentially fosteri…
Complexity appreciated
In the context of science communication, complexity is often reduced. This study employs a 2 × 2 experimental design ( N = 432) to investigate how two factors, namely the communication of complexity (reduced vs not reduced) and the provision of suggestions for concrete action (suggested vs not suggested), influence individuals’ productive engagement with the socio-scientific topic of sustainable energy. Measured variables include topic-specific i…
Math is cool – for school? Insights into preservice teachers’ views on the mathematics discipline between an academic and a job-related focus
In academic teacher education, preservice teachers may develop complex views on their chosen scientific discipline of study, as a tension may exist between a purely academic focus and a job-related focus. This study reports quantitative data from N = 259 preservice mathematics teachers indicating their views on the mathematics discipline in four facets of task value and enjoyment of mathematics as well as in an open statement. Cluster analysis of…
Keep Calm in Heated Debates
Scientific debates are, in an epistemological sense, argumentative approaches aimed at coming to the most appropriate conclusion. However, as these debates sometimes involve interpersonal rather than content-driven attacks (e.g., an argument between scientific experts might involve personal dislike), the following question arises: How do such communication behaviors affect people’s perception of the argument? In an empirical study, we presented p…
Replication crisis = trust crisis? The effect of successful vs failed replications on laypeople’s trust in researchers and research
In methodological and practical debates about replications in science, it is (often implicitly) assumed that replications will affect public trust in science. In this preregistered experiment ( N = 484), we varied (a) whether a replication attempt was successful or not and (b) whether the replication was authored by the same, or another lab. Results showed that ratings of study credibility (e.g. evidence strength, η P 2 = .15) and researcher trus…
Trust in Science and the Science of Trust
Evoking vigilance
The experimental studies presented here investigated whether discussing ethical implications of preliminary scientific results in a science blog would impact blog readers’ perception of the responsible scientist blogger’s epistemic trustworthiness (on the dimensions expertise, integrity, and benevolence). They also investigated whether it made a difference in who had brought forward the ethics aspects: the responsible scientist blogger or another…
Disclose your flaws! Admission positively affects the perceived trustworthiness of an expert science blogger
Addressing Challenges to Public Understanding of Science
Science is of critical importance to daily life in a knowledge society and has a significant influence on many everyday decisions. As scientific problems increase in their number and complexity, so do the challenges facing the public in understanding these issues. Our objective is to focus on 3 of those challenges: the challenge of reasoning about knowledge and the processes of knowing, the challenge of overcoming biases in that reasoning, and th…
Exploring laypeople’s epistemic beliefs about medicine – a factor-analytic survey study
Results indicate that laypeople have meaningful beliefs about the nature of medical knowledge and the trustworthiness of different sources. The instrument developed seems promising for measuring laypeople's epistemic beliefs about medicine, which may help to increase patients' compliance in medical decision making
Changing epistemological beliefs
Background Previous research has shown that sophisticated epistemological beliefs exert a positive influence on students' learning strategies and learning outcomes. This gives a clear educational relevance to studies on the development of methods for promoting a change in epistemological beliefs and making them more sophisticated.Aims To investigate the potential for influencing domain-specific epistemological beliefs through a short instructiona…
