Outgroup mobility threat - how much intergenerational integration is wanted
The descendants of immigrants have become increasingly successful in Western European education systems and labor markets, which in principle supports Richard Alba’s new assimilation theory (NAT). Still, acceptance and recognition on the part of the mainstream has not kept pace. We have suggested outgroup mobility threat (OMT), the fear of being overtaken by intergenerational mobility, as one possible explanation. However, Richard Alba has argued…
Studying Youth' Group Identities, Intergroup Relations, and Friendship Networks
This data brief introduces the Friendship and Identity in School (FIS) dataset. The FIS data are school-based longitudinal social network data, which have become increasingly important in recent years. Including information on 2,500 adolescents in nine secondary schools in the German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the FIS data have four important key features that make them uniquely suited for studying the co-evolution of friendship net…
Race for Second Place? Explaining East-West Differences in Anti-Muslim Sentiment in Germany
It has been shown that anti-Muslim sentiment is more pronounced in East Germany than in West Germany. In this paper, we discuss existing explanations and add to them. We argue that some East Germans see themselves as a disadvantaged group in competition with other minorities, such as Muslims, for social recognition by West Germans; they are in what we call a "race for second place". Based on social identity theory, we expect that this might be pa…
An empirical-analytical approach to the study of recent refugee migrants in Germany
Given the recent surge in interest in refugee research, this editorial discusses whether the study of refugees' migration and integration requires entirely new theoretical and methodological approaches. We make the case that refugee migration is a special type of migration and that refugee integration is subject to similar laws and regularities as the integration of all kinds of immigrants. Therefore, it should be studied using conventional theor…

Studying Integration from Adolescence to Early Adulthood
This data brief describes the German part and extension of the Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Survey in Four European Countries (CILS4EU-DE). The aim of CILS4EU-DE is to provide a data-infrastructure for theory-driven and evidence-based research on various aspects of integration among young people with and without an immigrant background in Germany. Key features of the survey are (i) its large and representative sample, with an oversampling …
Growing up in Diverse Societies
Growing up in Diverse Societies provides a comprehensive analysis of the integration of the children of immigrants in England, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden, based on the ‘Children of immigrants longitudinal survey in four European countries’ (CILS4EU), including harmonised interviews with almost 19,000 14- to 15-year-olds. The book studies the life situation, social relations, and attitudes of adolescents in different ethnic minority grou…

Setting "Spanish legacies" into further context
This contribution compares some major findings of "Spanish Legacies" to findings from the CILS4EU study that has been conducted in four other European countries. Despite the differences in the immigration history and the composition of the immigrant youth, basic results of psychosocial adaptation are surprisingly similar for England, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden. This confirms the mostly optimistic picture of the future of the second gene…
Social Network Analysis in the Study of Ethnic Inequalities
Standard large‐scale survey designs and methods enabled integration research to progress far in recent decades, emphasizing especially the structural aspects of ethnic minorities' integration. To further increase our understanding, the role social aspects play in the complex process of integration merits more attention. Within this endeavor, network analytical designs and techniques provide a particularly promising complement to the standard empi…
Social Capital in Polish-German Migration Decision-Making
In this article we use a combination of retrospective and prospective data from the Polish Migration Project to examine the effect of social capital on the likelihood of migrating to Germany. We derive hypotheses from social capital theory about how personal connections to people with migratory experience affect the probability of migration, and we specify models to be estimated using both the retrospective and prospective data. Estimates of retr…

Migrant Networks and Labor Market Integration of Immigrants from the Former Soviet Union in Germany
Migrant networks are usually regarded as helpful for the labor market integration of recently arrived immigrants. From a general assimilation perspective, however, it has been questioned whether they are really the right sort of ties to help immigrants succeed in the host society, or whether, instead, they constitute some sort of mobility trap. Empirical evidence from available studies is mixed, and a reference to more general social capital theo…

Intergenerational Change in Religious Salience Among Immigrant Families in Four European Countries
This paper investigates religiosity among immigrant children in four European countries: England, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden. Drawing on major strands of theories in the sociology of religion and of migration, we analyse intergenerational change in religiosity within immigrant families of different religious affiliation and test how far common arguments can contribute to explaining existing patterns. We overcome several challenges and sh…
Rational Choice Theory and Empirical Research
Rational choice theory (RCT) constitutes a major approach of sociological theorizing and research in Europe. We review key methodological and theoretical contributions that have arisen from the increasing empirical application of RCT and have the potential to stimulate the development of RCT and sociology more generally. Methodologically, discussions have evolved around how to test RCT empirically and how to realize its ambition to give theory-gu…
Differences in earnings assimilation of immigrants from the Former Soviet Union to Germany and Israel during 1994-2005
The present study considers the interplay between patterns of immigrants’ self-selection and the context of reception (i.e. migration policies and the operation of the labor market) at the host country on different economic assimilation patterns. We compare three groups of immigrants from the Former Soviet Union (FSU) who arrived in Israel and Germany during 1994—2005: Jewish immigrants who arrived in Israel, Jewish immigrants who arrived in Germ…

Social Capital and the Dynamics of Temporary Labour Migration from Poland to Germany
This article tests the popular social capital hypothesis in the context of recent temporary labour migration from Poland to Germany. It relies on data from the Polish Migration Project, which, following the model of the prominent Mexican Migration Project, collected rich longitudinal information on residents of four Polish communities in 2005. Discrete event history analyses are used to test, first, whether since 1989 prior migration experience o…

Friendship and identity in school
The research project Friendship and Identity in School, which is funded by the German ResearchFoundation (DFG), investigates the formation and change of adolescents’ social networks and ethnic identifications. For this purpose, network panel data were collected in nine schools in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. This field report documents the preparation and collection of the three waves of data, which were completed in May …

The dissolution of marriages
Information and marital‐specific capital are key concepts in Gary Becker's theory of divorce. According to this approach, both information on the spouse obtained before marriage and marital‐specific capital should decrease the risk of divorce. Until now, however, convincing empirical tests of these hypotheses have been scarce. This is mainly due to methodological problems. On the one hand, available information indicators (like cohabitation) are …

Structural Conditions of Preferences for Segregation
Why might rational actors be interested in establishing a system of segregation, and under what structural conditions will this be more or less likely? To answer these questions, Coleman's `linear system of action' serves as a starting point. It can be shown that, given a random assignment of interest and control, a considerable number of actors may gain by splitting the group according to a binary ascriptive characteristic. Furthermore, it is no…
