Unfinished monument to Batman's Treaty
Tom Nicholson presents traces from his ‘Unfinished monument to Batman's Treaty’ (2011–), an ongoing public sculpture project engaging Batman's Treaty, its history and meanings. The work takes as its starting point Melbourne's first chimney, the chimney built for John Batman by William Buckley. IN THIS STUDY, two classes ofjunior high school pupils were observed for two school terms as they coped with the reading demands of the four main content areas Math, English, Science and Social Studies. The pupils were interviewed in the classroom while they were working at their desks. In all, observations covered some 18,000 minutes of classroom time, and more than 3,600 minutes of interviews were recorded. The interview data revealed that ther…

In June 1832 a battle had been lost, but for all the steam promoters except Gurney, the war was far from over. The old campaigners fought on, and new ones, undiscouraged by the Lords decision, entered the fray. During the remainder of 1832, however, activity was slow to build up.
