Critical Issues Facing Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in Organizations and Society
The discussion of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) in the context of the West is uniquely complex. AAPIs are often held up as "model minorities," resulting in exclusion from many equity conversations. The lack of attention focusing on the experiences of AAPI communities in organizations and society suggests a need for us to remedy this. In this special issue, we curated a collection of eight papers that tackle a broad range of issues…
Breaking the Glass Ceiling
This is a qualitative study of the career perspectives of early female leaders in Canada whose careers emerged from the second‐wave feminist movement and who ascended to executive leadership positions. Using a discourse analytic lens, we analyze their perspectives on women's limited presence in executive leadership roles. The research participants suggested that women lacked the necessary resilience or personality; women lacked requisite politica…

Whiteness in academia, time to listen, and moving beyond White fragility
The months since society observed the horrific, real time murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis have the potential to be transformational in so many areas, including the academy. Many White academics renewed their wokeness, born out of tragedy and pledged to do better. Yet, Dar et al. (2020), in a provoking essay, aptly points to how the academy in general, and business schools in particular, reproduce ideologies that reinforce White supremacy an…
Black lives matter
Systemic discrimination, racism, and inequality have garnered renewed and intense attention following the George Floyd murder and demonstrations of Black Lives Matter (BLM) around the world. In sharing our anger and sorrow, we reached out to several colleagues and scholars in the Black community. We wanted to provide a forum [1] for them to express their grief, share their experiences and help us move forward. The response to our invitation to wr…
Determinants of Migrant Career Success
Australia has been aggressively pursuing skilled migrants to sustain its population and foster economic growth. However, many skilled migrants experience a downward career move upon migration to Australia. Based on a survey of recent skilled migrants, this study investigates how individual (age, years of settlement, qualifications), national/societal (citizenship and settlement), and organization‐level (climate of inclusion) factors influence the…
A Trump presidency and the prospect for equality and diversity
[Extract] During the 2016 US Presidential election, Republican Candidate (now President) Donald J. Trump made headlines around the world for vitriolic and inflammatory remarks against women, immigrants, Muslims, and other minority groups. Trump promised to build a wall along the Mexican border, ban Muslims from entering the USA, tighten abortion laws, repeal the Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare"), and restrict press freedom (Bulman, 2016). His vis…

Employment equity in Canada
Employment equity initiatives – redressing past inequities or discrimination by promoting the hiring of members of underrepresented groups – are controversial and divisive. Although a national Gallup poll (1993) indicated 74 % of Canadians felt a person's qualifications should solely determine hiring decisions, many have little knowledge and understanding of the issue. Adopting a discourse analytic framework, this research explores employees’ und…
A SWOT Analysis of Multiculturalism in Canada, Europe, Mauritius, and South Korea

Relative deprivation, self-interest and social justice
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to offer an insight into why men do research on in-equality. Design/methodology/approach – The author utilizes autoethnography, as a form of self-reflection, to help make sense of the own experiences and to connect it with the broader world. It is a narrative based on personal experiences which connects the author's biography with his research endeavours. It also enables to engage in self-analysis and self-a…
Sexual orientation, work values, pay, and preference for public and nonprofit employment
Evidence shows that gay men hold fewer government jobs in the US than their share of the population would predict. Two large surveys of Canadian university and college students, however, indicate no lack of interest in public sector jobs among gay, lesbian, transgender and queer people ( GLBTQs ). This article explores data on the differing perceptions, motivations, and expectations of GLBTQ students of public and nonprofit employment. We find th…

Design/methodology/approach The authors used data from the 2006 Participation and Activity Limitation Survey (PALS) conducted by Statistics Canada to develop six categories of employment st…
New Generation, Great Expectations
Cultural values as predictors of attitudes towards equality and diversity
This exploratory study examined the role of both gender and race/ethnicity, and their interaction, on cultural values likely to be related to attitudes toward equality and diversity and an attitude towards equality and diversity itself. Data were collected from 120 employees from a large financial institution in Canada. Non‐North Americans and non‐Caucasians held cultural values that were found to be associated with less support for equality. The…
