  • ‘Do you want to be a bully?’ Critical school textbook analysis on friendship and bullying

Open Access•Eveliina Puutio, Anne-Mari Väisänen et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology of…•2026

The aim of primary school relationship education is to enhance the safety of children’s relationships and prevent discrimination. School textbooks not only teach about bullying and friendships but also construct norms for relationships and behavior. In this study, we apply ‘concept as method’ analysis to 30 Finnish textbooks for grades 4–6, combining critical peer relationship research and Michel Foucault’s concepts. We ask: what categorizations,…

  • What makes bullying complicated - teachers’ perceptions of bullying-related issues in school

Open Access•M Lanas, M Petäjäniemi et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology of…•2026

This paper examines what makes bullying challenging for teachers. We draw on scholarship that conceptualises bullying as a socially, culturally, and institutionally produced phenomenon, shaped by group dynamics, structural inequalities, and the material-discursive conditions of school life. The study investigates what teachers recognise as peer related challenges that fall outside the dominant psychology-driven definition of bullying. Using itera…

  • What’s love got to do with it? Thinking touch in education with theories of love

    Open Access•Virve Keränen, M Lanas•ARTICLE•Discourse Studies in the Cultural…•2025•Referências: 46

Love and touch are commonly considered irrelevant, soft or unprofessional topics in education. Touch has a difficult history in educational institutions across international contexts. There is a strong body of research looking into violent touch in education. In this paper, we explore touch in educational institutions through the theory of love. Taking a diffractive approach, we present three cases showing, first, how love might be lacking in mom…

This article examines misopedy – hatred of children – in educational settings. Drawing on nine qualitative datasets, including interviews, ethnographic observations, questionnaire responses and literature, it argues that misopedy is a socially, collectively, and structurally produced system. The paper analyses discursive practices embedded in educational frameworks, showing how children are positioned as fundamentally flawed, lacking agency, and …

    Open Access•Kaisu Alamikkela, P Rautio et al.•ARTICLE•Discourse Studies in the Cultural…•2025•Citada por: 1•Referências: 40

School environments in Finland are changing from traditional classrooms towards more flexible architectures. This change invites designers and commercial organizations to take part in re-thinking these environments by creating narratives of desirable educational environments. Their comprehensive furniture solutions promise flexible entities, including components that facilitate sharing and joining together. This article describes the school archi…

  • The production of a child in conflict in teacher education – research on available storylines

Open Access•M Lanas, M Petäjäniemi et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Teacher…•2024

Teacher education takes part in producing childhood. This is rarely discussed in teacher education. In this study, we are interested in what kinds of positions become normalised for children and youth in the discourses in teacher education. We utilise the concepts of narrative resources and storylines, looking into the storylines in which student teachers take themselves to be in, and in the positions that are opened for pupils in these storyline…

  • Cultural practices, young people and the ethos of vulnerability in Finland

    K Brunila, Inka Tähkä et al.•ARTICLE•Emotions and Society•2024•Citada por: 2•Referências: 3

In this article, we delve into an examination of how the ethos of vulnerability is manifested within cultural practices related to young people in Finland, thereby shaping and determining the conditions of what is possible for the kinds of subjects that young people can become. We employed the term ‘affective subjectivation’ to elucidate the processes through which young people from diverse life situations are inclined to turn themselves into vul…

    Open Access•Iida Kauhanen, M Lanas et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 8

Despite the rhetoric of inclusion and equal participation, educational practices end up producing social exclusion. In this research, we are interested in practices where outcomes fail to match efforts with respect to students’ opportunities to participate equally. The research was carried out as a focused ethnography with young people who arrived in Finland as unaccompanied asylum-seeking youths. The results show that separated learning environm…

    Open Access•Iida Kauhanen, M Kaukko et al.•ARTICLE•Children and Youth Services Review•2022•Citada por: 1•Referências: 43

This article discusses how needs for loving relationships are met for unaccompanied asylum-seeking children in Finland. The data was collected through a focused ethnography with 13 unaccompanied children. The findings show that institutional protocols and practices fail to consider the need for love of these children, hindering their possibilities to create or maintain loving relationships. The findings also suggest that new loving ties could be …

M Lanas, Eva Bendix Petersen et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Studies in Education•2020•Referências: 10

Bad student behaviour is argued to be one of the major challenges for schools today. In response to the challenge, there is a strong body of literature aiming at fixing student behaviour. In this paper, we look into professional knowledge discourses regarding ‘bad student behaviour,’ focusing on one national context, Finland, to explore how disturbing behaviour is discursively established in the professional literature for teachers seeking help w…

In order to generate new knowledge about the situated and fluid experiences of young adult asylum seekers’ confinement, this article focuses on four in-de…

  • Bad behaviour in school

    M Lanas, K Brunila•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology of…•2019•Citada por: 2•Referências: 49

Disturbing, problematic, or challenging student behaviour is said to be among the greatest challenges facing today’s school life. However, despite the apparent commonsensical nature of the issue, there is no commonly agreed upon definition for such events, and there is often very thin analysis of what actually becomes disturbed, challenged, or problematised in such instances. In this article, disturbing behaviour is seen as a discursive practice …

We raise some critical questions about the concept of resistance in educational thought based upon findings from two dif-ferent qualitative research projects: one in Arctic Finland; and the other in coastal Atlantic Canada.
