Teaching through TikTok
Considering the COVID-19 pandemic, teaching, and learning encounters in higher education have changed. Online teaching has become routine and a variety of virtual learning platforms are being explored. Within this article we, two higher dance education teachers and researchers, reflect on using TikTok in our work. Taking a duoethnographic approach, we explore engagement with TikTok in our contexts of teaching in higher education institutions in C…
Shifting lights through the interstices
The purpose of this study is to explore interstitial spaces in higher music education. Interstitial spaces are small-scale settings where individuals interact around common activities. Drawing from the learning experiences of three students, the disparate feelings that students have within the interstices are unpacked. Specifically, we lean on Michel Foucault’s notions of power and hierarchy as a way to explore the dynamics in the teaching and le…
Exploring musician-educators’ reflections on a collaborative cross-cultural music making encounter in Singapore
Professional musician-educators from a tertiary arts institution in Singapore collaborated on a cross-cultural performance in Beijing as part of their professional development. Through a case study, semi-structured interviews explored the music making experiences of four of the musician-educators involved: the composer, the singer, the pianist and the erhu performer. Their experiences address the concept of cross-cultural music making and its sig…
How false feedback influences decision‐makers' risk preferences
Recent decision‐making research provides empirical evidence that human risk preferences are constructed “on the fly” during risk elicitation, influenced by the decision‐making context and the method of risk elicitation (Kusev et al., 2020). In this article, we explore the lability of human risk preferences and argue that the most recent choices guide decision‐making. Accordingly, our novel proposal and experimental method provide a psychological …
A reimagined world
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is currently sweeping the globe. With this pandemic impacting social, political and economic spheres, this article unpacks COVID-19 in relation to international tertiary dance education, asking: How are we sustaining international relationships and global dialogues within dance education in light of COVID-19? What might be new ways of engaging internationally if we are not physically able to travel in the ways we di…
Teaching collaborative dexterity in higher education
This article draws on a multi-phase study of collaboration in tertiary education programmes. This commenced with a survey of 111 students in Engineering and Creative Arts, contrasting their experiences of the teaching of collaboration in different faculties. This led to an iterative action research cycle, in which the conceptual boundaries that surrounded teachers’ approaches to teaching collaboration were explored through qualitative interviews …
Streams of Writing From a Fluid City
What is the relationship between qualitative research and environmental activism? At a time when the effects of environmental damage are becoming increasingly more visible and flooding our daily lives in unpredictable and sometimes devastating ways, how do qualitative methods of research and writing respond to current environmental challenges? This article discusses an arts-science-education collaboration titled fluid city, which disseminates cri…

Fairness, Equality and Legitimacy
The pressures of globalization and shifts towards post‐industrialism are producing policies that increasingly emphasize the common themes of activation and of individual responsibility for outcomes. Such approaches suggest normative principles of equality of opportunity rather than of outcome, and of individual rather than collective responsibility for the outcomes achieved. Does this imply a shift towards a common normative framework for Europea…
