  • Southern Song Freelance Painters (1127–1279)

    Open Access•Huiping Pang•ARTICLE•Journal of Chinese History•2021

This article makes visible the complex social position of a previously overlooked class of Southern Song artists: freelance painters, who worked for the imperial court on a temporary, as-needed basis, but who have been mischaracterized as permanent, official “court painters” by post-Song historiographers. Through an analysis of the careers of freelance painters such as Chen Qingbo and Li Dong, I posit a hybrid class of adjunct-artists, who made t…

  • Multiple Siyin Half Seals

Huiping Pang•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Oriental…•2021•Citada por: 2

This paper takes an initial but significant step toward penetrating the intricate historiography of the renowned siyin ("official seal") half seal, which appears on 199 surviving or now-lost canonical Chinese paintings and calligraphies. Through a forensic tracking of the siyin art pieces, Ming dynasty court diaries, legal statutes, and other official seals ending in the words si and yin, I refute the dominant twentieth-century theory by arguing …

  • Heritage or Imperial Violence

    Huiping Pang•ARTICLE•Ming Studies•2016•Citada por: 1•Referências: 13

The bequeathing of property within a royal family is ostensibly a clean transfer governed by clear legal codes. In the case of the Ming imperial court, many assume that imperial collections were commonly gifted from the cosmopolitan capital to the peripheral princedoms. A long-standing hypothesis holds that the first Ming emperor, Hongwu (r. 1368–98) bestowed a collection of fourth- to fourteenth-century canonical paintings and calligraphies to h…

  • The Confiscating Henchmen

    Huiping Pang•ARTICLE•Ming Studies•2015•Referências: 6

The story of how Embroidered-Uniform Guard confiscators defied the Ming Emperor Wanli (r. 1573–1620) to uphold their own particular view of justice is rich in detail, but has been virtually ignored in scholarship on Ming cultural history. This paper presents a case study of the Embroidered-Uniform Guard confiscator Liu Shouyou (c. 1540–1604) and his guardsmen, who risked their own lives in assisting the deposed grand secretary to illegally evade …

Strange Weather: Art, Politics, and Climate Change at the Court of Northern Song Emperor Huizong Huiping Pang This study addresses aspects of culture and politics at the court of the Northern Song emperor Huizong 徽宗 (1082–1135, r. 1100–1125) during the middle years of his reign, particularly around 1110. It describes and analyzes the complex relationship between imperial court politics and the ways in which the arts, such as painting and calligra…
