Better Design, Better Engagement, Better Data
INTRODUCTION: Adolescent health research can be hampered by a lack of representative participation, limited long-term engagement, and inaccuracies in self-reported responses. This study aimed to explore adolescents' perspectives on participating in health research in order to understand how to enhance engagement, representation, and data quality. METHODS: Forty-six adolescents (aged 16-18 years) at five English schools participated in nine focus …
Investing in youth public mental health in India
Introduction: In India, although rates of adolescent anxiety and depression are of concern and contribute to a high youth suicide rate, public mental health approaches targeting adolescents are rare. India does not have an integrated whole-school mental health approach to promote youth wellbeing and prevent anxiety and depression. The aim of this study (Project SAMA) was to co- produce a whole school mental health program for delivery in Indian s…
Isolation despite hyper-connectivity? The association between adolescents’ mental health and online behaviours in a large study of school-aged students
Smartphone use has risen rapidly amongst adolescents over the last decade, as has the rates of common mental disorders. This has raised widespread concerns about direct links between adolescents’ general screen time, social media use and their mental health. This study aimed to describe adolescents’ online behaviours (e.g., time spent on social media) and how that relates to anxiety, depression, and loneliness. In a sample of 14,726 adolescents (…
Loneliness and self-harm in adolescents during the first national Covid-19 lockdown
Adolescents’ loneliness and self-harm have received considerable attention during the COVID-19 pandemic with concerns that the socioecological changes taking place would contribute to an escalation of both loneliness and self-harm. However, empirical evidence is scant. We estimated the prevalence of loneliness and self-harm in adolescent school pupils and investigated the association of loneliness and change in loneliness during the UK’s first lo…
A cross‐sectional investigation into the role of intersectionality as a moderator of the relation between youth adversity and adolescent depression/anxiety symptoms in the community
BACKGROUND: Adolescents exposed to adversity show higher levels of depression and anxiety, with the strongest links seen in socially/societally disadvantaged individuals (e.g., females, low socioeconomic status [SES]), as well as neurodivergent individuals. The intersection of these characteristics may be important for the differential distribution of adversity and mental health problems, though limited findings pertain to the extent to which int…
Insomnia symptoms in children and adolescents
The SCI-02 is an efficient, two-question measure to screen for potential sleep problems in young people. Sleep disruption was high: one in ten were experiencing poor sleep. Females and adolescents appeared more vulnerable to poor sleep and daytime sleepiness. The SCI-02 has the potential for use in school and community contexts to identify children and adolescents who may benefit from support managing their sleep
Current evidence and opportunities in child and adolescent public mental health
BACKGROUND: A public mental health lens is increasingly required to better understand the complex and multifactorial influences of interpersonal, community and institutional systems on the mental health of children and adolescents. METHODS: This research review (1) provides an overview of public mental health and proposes a new interactional schema that can guide research and practice, (2) summarises recent evidence on public mental health interv…
Partnerships at the Interface of Education and Mental Health Services
Partnerships between school staff and mental health professionals have the potential to improve access to mental health support for students, but uncertainty remains regarding whether and how they work in practice. We report on two pilot projects aimed at understanding the implementation drivers of tailored strategies for supporting and engaging front-line school staff in student mental health. The first project provided regular, accessible menta…
Promoting positive development among refugee adolescents
Of the estimated 35.3 million refugees around the world (UNHCR, Figures at a Glance , 2022), approximately 50% are children under the age of 18. Refugee adolescents represent a unique group as they navigate developmental tasks in an unstable and often threatening environment or in resettlement contexts in which they often face marginalization. In addition to physiological, social, and psychological changes that mark adolescence, refugee youth oft…
Determining stakeholder priorities and core components for school-based identification of mental health difficulties
Only approximately half of children and young people (CYP) with mental health difficulties access mental health services in England, with under-identification of need as a contributing factor. Schools may be an ideal setting for identifying mental health difficulties in CYP, but uncertainty remains about the processes by which these needs can best be identified and addressed. In this study, we conducted a two-round, three-panel Delphi study with …
Utilization and Acceptability of Formal and Informal Support for Adolescents Following Self-Harm Before and During the First Covid-19 Lockdown
More than a third of secondary school students in this sample did not seek any help following self-harm. The majority of those not seeking help did not find this to be a helpful way of coping. Further work needs to determine effective ways of overcoming barriers to help-seeking among adolescents who self-harm and improving perceived helpfulness of the supports accessed

Five Applications of Narrative Exposure Therapy for Children and Adolescents Presenting With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders
Narrative exposure therapy (NET) is an individual therapeutic approach that has an emerging evidence base for children. It was initially trialed with refugee and asylum seeking populations, in low, middle and high-income settings, utilizing either lay or professional therapists. The results of treatment trials for PTSD in refugee children with NET (or the child "KIDNET" adaptation) demonstrates how this is an effective intervention, is scalable a…
Relationship between children’s cognitions and later educational progress in rural South Africa
BACKGROUND: Children in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) who remain in school have better health and employment outcomes. South Africa, like many LMICs, has a secondary school completion rate under 50%, leaving room for improvement if we can identify factors that affect educational attainment. This is the first longitudinal study to examine the effects of childhood mental health and cognitions on educational outcomes in LMIC. METHOD…

The Role of Communities in Mental Health Care in Low- and Middle-Income Countries
Community-based mental health services are emphasized in the World Health Organization’s Mental Health Action Plan, the World Bank’s Disease Control Priorities, and the Action Plan of the World Psychiatric Association. There is increasing evidence for effectiveness of mental health interventions delivered by non-specialists in community platforms in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). However, the role of community components has yet to be s…
Acceptability of screening for mental health difficulties in primary schools
Results suggest that most parents within the socio-demographic context of our study will accept MHD screening within primary schools, and that school-based screening is viable from the perspective of parents. The comments provided about potential harms as well as suggestions for programme delivery are relevant to inform the development and evaluation of acceptable and sustainable school-based identification models. Implementation and scale-up of …

The mental health of refugee children
The UK is facing a major increase in the number of people seeking asylum each year, of whom approximately a quarter are children. The stressors to which refugees are exposed are described in three stages: (1) while in their country of origin; (2) during their flight to safety; and (3) when having to settle in a country of refuge. The evidence concerning the impact of displacement on children's mental health is reviewed and a framework for concept…
