This text focuses on a moment of failed political idealism, when leisure meant much more than fun. Between 1945 and 1961 the government funded the hiring of a cadre of recreation directors in the villages, towns, and cities of Ontario. Fatherhood, Masculinity, and the Good Life During Canada's Baby Boom, 1945-1965
Based on fieldwork completed in two British Columbia locales—Prince George and Abbotsford—this study places oral histories of fatherhood in the context of idealistic depictions of masculine domesticity that circulated in the mass print media during the baby boom. It addresses tendencies among the men interviewed to frame stories of being husbands, parents, coaches, and family vacationers in material terms. Their self-portraits of domestic masculi…

This article examines how collective responses to the outbreak of the First World War in Canada were constructed and experienced. From city press reports generated across the country in early August 1914, descriptions of various forms of street theatres are summarized and assessed.
