Children, adolescents, and youth. How have they been seen by adults? How have they seen themselves and responded to their surroundings? And how can such broad questions be taken as evidence of America's past, from the Puri- tans, to the resettlement of the American West, to the present day? Since the dissemination of Philippe Ariès's Centuries of Childhood (1960), studies of growing up have produced enormous debate across a spectrum of historical practices, from studies of birth weights among social historians to cultural readings of adolescent angst in the popular press.1 Considering how his- torians of growing up try to interpret how their subjects have approached maturity often reveals as much about changing professional practices as it does about the complex histories of childhood and maturation themselves. With this in mind, I have divided my attention between observations on what these three books contribute to our understanding of growing up in America, and what each presents as examples of shifting modes in academic writing
