There is no one historical journal that is more influential in the world today than the Annales: Economies, Societes, Civilisations. It is perhaps the only journal that is widely recognized by the shortened version of its title, and its intellectual hegemony within French history circles makes it an almost inevitable starting-point for discussion of debates and advances in French history in the last two decades. Although French history as it is practised in France is not the same as French history as practised in other countries, especially England and America, the Annales has become a standard point of reference in French history both for its admirers and for its critics
