How trauma-informed are we? A comparative framework analysis of early intervention service guidelines for psychosis and trauma-informed principles
Background This study assessed the extent to which early intervention guidelines for psychosis align with trauma-informed care principles and identifies gaps in integration. Methods Clinical guidelines were sourced through literature reviews and principles of trauma-informed care were identified from previous literature. Using a deductive approach to framework analysis, four overarching themes and sub-themes were developed from existing guidelines…
Healthy young adult relationships (Hyar)
The onus for educating and supporting young people in navigating romantic relationships often falls on professional youth work organizations; yet, evidence relating to healthy young adult relationship (HYAR) education programmes delivered within these settings remains limited. The present study sought to capture youth work professionals' views as part of a research programme focused on developing HYAR education resources for young people. Eleven …
Impact of Covid-19 Lockdown on Intimate Partner Violence Prevalence Amongst Pregnant Women in Northern Ireland
Purpose Pregnancy has been posited as a period of unique vulnerability for Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) victimisation. This brief report examined the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on IPV victimisation during pregnancy by measuring post implementation changes in rates, with comparisons to the same period in non-lockdown years. Methods Secondary data analysis of the Northern Ireland Maternity System (NIMATS) database containing pregnancy presentat…
Evaluation of the psychometric properties of trauma history measures
Overall, the TLEQ emerged as the most robust legacy measure of trauma history. Future studies should assess its psychometrics in comparison with the new generation of measures (i.e., Life Events Checklist, International Trauma Exposure Measure) to further the development of assessment tools in this area. Attitudes of U.S. Adults Towards Coercive Control as a Function of Victim and Perpetrator Gender and Respondent Sexual Orientation
Intimate partner violence research has overwhelmingly focused on women victims of men perpetrators, yet men and LGBTQ + individuals similarly remain at risk of victimisation. There is limited evidence regarding what factors influence attitudes toward coercive control. The current study explored the associations of victim and perpetrator gender, victim-perpetrator sexual orientation, and respondent sexual orientation with attitudes toward coercive…
What can we learn about mental health from 10,933 patient lived experiences using a novel quantitative-qualitative network analysis
Objective: The study aims to build a comprehensive network structure of psychopathology based on patient narratives by combining the merits of both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. Research methods: The study web-scraped data from 10,933 people who disclosed a prior DSM/ICD11 diagnosed mental illness when discussing their lived experiences of mental ill health. The study then used Python 3 and its associated libraries to run n…
Young People’s Understanding of Coercive Control in Northern Ireland
Coercive control and related research have progressed significantly in the past number of years, with an ever-growing evidence base adding to its construct. However, currently there is a lack of evidence on young people's knowledge and understanding of coercive control. We included a module of questions in the 2020 Northern Ireland Young Life and Life and Times survey ( n = 2,069) with the aim of capturing baseline measurable data on understandin…
Neighbourhood effects on psychotic and depressive symptoms in the context of religious sectarianism in Northern Ireland
BACKGROUND: The incidence of psychotic disorders is higher in ethnic minorities groups. The 'ethnic density effect', in which living in a neighbourhood with a low own-group proportion increases the risk of psychosis, is one explanatory factor. The density effect in the ethno-religious and sectarian context of Northern Ireland has been found to be reversed, particularly for Catholics, in which there is harmful effect of high own-group density area…
Public Understanding of Coercive Control in Northern Ireland
Coercive control is characterised by negative behaviours which intimidate, threaten, and humiliate a person or restrict a person's liberty. In addition to being a known risk factor for experiencing other forms of violence, research has linked coercive control to symptoms of psychological distress and suicidality. In the UK, coercive and controlling behaviours within intimate and familial relationships have been legislated as offending behaviours.…
