  • The Pedagogical Readings as a unique historical source for research on the pedagogical work with disabled pupils in the GDR educational system

    Open Access•Katja Koch, Kristina Koebe•ARTICLE•History of Education•2022

German Democratic Republic (GDR) pedagogy is still a topic that is as fascinating as it is controversial – in particular, when it comes to school and teaching. This article is dedicated to a source that has so far remained internationally unnoticed, the Pedagogical Readings as a written recording of experiences and providing innovative proposals implemented by GDR pedagogues. A total of about 9500 have been preserved to date in the Library for Ed…

  • By educators for educators” – an introduction to a GDR education television project for teachers (1970–1982)

    Katja Koch, Kristina Koebe•ARTICLE•Paedagogica Historica•2022

The GDR series “Von Pädagogen für Pädagogen” (“By Educators for Educators”), which addressed GDR educators, was established in 1970 and then broadcast in this form for 13 years at approximately monthly intervals. The article presented here locates the programme within the GDR’s continuing education landscape and endeavours to reconstruct the origins and further development of the programme. It offers a valuable insight into the GDR’s education an…

  • Feldforschung im postsowjetischen Raum. Methodologische Reflexion international vergleichender sonderpädagogischer Forschung

    Open Access•Katja Koch, Stephan Kehl•ARTICLE•ZEP – Zeitschrift für international…•2021

Our research on dangers of excluding people with disabilities and the scope of actions that aim at supporting their inclusion in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan has revealed the challenging circumstances empirical studies face in intercultural fields. These challenges, as identified in our study, suggest an increased necessity of iterative (self-)reflection in the research process. This is a valuable outcome of our study that is not constraint to inter…

    Katja Koch•CHAPTER•Jahrbuch Jugendforschung•2007

Central historical, biographical and school-related aspects of formation and education are brought together in this work to point to the diversity of educational sciences. Tradition and innovation are recurrent themes in all the articles. As Friedrich Schleiermacher puts it in his understanding of generations as constituent aspect of pedagogy itself: only who fathoms the tradition and who is aware of the tradition will be able to be innovative – …

  • Sacred Forests in Tibet

Open Access•Georg Miehe, Sabine Miehe et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2003

The treeless desertlike environments of southern Tibet are assumed to be naturally unsuitable for forests. Yet, climatic conditions do allow for the growth of indigenous trees in Lhasa and many parts of southern Tibet, even where there is no high groundwater table or irrigation. This was discovered and proven in a Sino–German research project launched in 1997. The project made an inventory of forest relics, correlated residual tree stands with cl…
