The Politics of Disruption and the Ongoing Impact on Local Education Politics
Purpose: This research examines how national actors, like Moms for Liberty (M4L), used the politics of disruption to challenge existing school leaders and reshape local education politics. Teacher Political Candidacy and the Gender Composition of State Legislatures
In this article, we examine the extent to which women teachers ran for state legislative office in 2018, where they won, and the degree to which they contributed to the surge of women representatives elected in state legislatures around the country. We engaged in a comprehensive effort to collect information on all of the teacher candidates who ran for seats in state legislatures during the 2018 midterm elections. Rural communities need better state education policies
The specific needs of rural schools and communities have received limited attention from state policy makers, and many state programs have only added to the challenges that school districts in rural areas face. This mixed-methods study analyzed adolescents’ evaluation of the trustworthiness of different kinds of evidence and their reasons for why they trusted (or did not trust) them. Specifically, we analyzed adolescents’ rankings of seven kinds of evidence in the abstract and in the context of a settled historical event (school desegregation) and whether differences existed between their rankings. Recent election cycles have seen growing attention to the role of “outside” money in urban school board elections. Using an original data set of more than 16,000 contributions covering election cycles from 2008 to 2013 in four school districts (Los Angeles, CA; New Orleans, LA; Denver, CO; Bridgeport, CT), we show how large national donors play a significant role. Using a nationally representative survey, this article examines how citizen satisfaction with one public institution, public schools, is shaped by normative expectations regarding what goals schools ought to pursue. We expand extant literature on the role of expectations in shaping satisfaction, which typically focuses on performance expectations, by exploring goal expectations.
