Proximity-centred accessibility – A conceptual debate involving planning practitioners worldwide
In recent years, the concept of proximity has garnered increasing attention in both transportation research and practice, albeit under various terms and interpretations. Among these, the concept of the 15-minute city has catalysed attention in planning practice, with recent evolution to the x-minute city and city of proximities. In research, proximity-centred accessibility has been offered as an umbrella term to express the ability to reach activ…
Rosa Parks railway station area in Paris as an Equitable Transit-oriented development
The surrounding area of the Rosa Parks railway station, located in the administrative district of Pont de Flandres in the 19th borough of Paris, has witnessed significant growth, transitioning from brownfields to vibrant, mixed- use neighborhoods. This development includes transforming the Calberson warehouses along Boulevard McDonald, considered as Paris's largest building (615 m long), into new housing, retail offices, and community facilities.…

What Is the Shape of Geographical Time-Space? A Three-Dimensional Model Made of Curves and Cones
Geographical time-spaces exhibit a series of properties, including space inversion, that turns any representation effort into a complex task. In order to improve the legibility of the representation and leveraging the advances of three-dimensional computer graphics, the aim of the study is to propose a new method extending time-space relief cartography introduced by Mathis and L’Hostis. The novelty of the model resides in the use of cones to desc…
Contextual Metrics a Mathematical Definition for a Comprehensive Approach of Geographical Distances
Our goal is to establish a mathematical framework for the description of geographical distance in a comprehensive way. Geographical distance always refer to potential or realized movement between places, and these displacements obey the least effort rule. While this optimization of effort is well known to imply the Triangle Inequality in many situation, breaks in movement generate a paradox: effort optimization, taking into account the need to re…
Detour and break optimising distance, a new perspective on transport and urbanism
By studying the mathematical properties of metrics, we identify three fundamental characteristics of distance, which are optimality, detour and break. In this paper, we explore the implications of these properties for transport planning, urbanism and spatial planning. We state that distances contain the idea of optimum and that any distance is associated to a search for optimisation. Pedestrian movements obey this principle and sometimes depart f…
