A Blessing and a Curse
Purpose Examining the influence of policy change and socio-political factors is paramount for contextualizing and addressing sexual violence. The purpose of this paper is to provide findings from a secondary qualitative analysis of the impacts of national and local high-profile events on the dialogue and actions surrounding violence prevention and response on college campuses. Comparison of Intimate Partner Violence and Correlates at Urgent Care Clinics and an Emergency Department in a Rural Population
This paper describes the prevalence of and factors associated with intimate partner violence (IPV) in the urgent care setting and an academic emergency department in Appalachia. A questionnaire assessing social support, mental and physical health status, substance use, and intimate partner violence was administered to 236 women seeking care in an academic emergency department or two affiliated urgent care clinics. Data collected were compared to …
Association of Loneliness and Mindfulness in Substance Use Treatment Retention
Elevated mental illness prevalence complicates efforts designed to address the opioid crisis in Appalachia. The recovery community acknowledges that loneliness impacts mood and engagement in care factors; however, the predictive relationship between loneliness and retention in medication-assisted outpatient treatment programs has not been explored. Our objectives were to identify associations between mental health factors and retention in treatme…
An etic view of LGBTQ healthcare
Current research in SGM health outcomes and disparities has made great strides, but a more in-depth understanding of the health needs of the population and how to address them is still required. This study aims to identify the health needs of the SGM population through in-depth interviews with researchers and health care providers that have spent their careers working with members of this population. Four themes were identified: LGBQ and trans ou…
Using School Climate to Improve Attendance and Grades
BACKGROUND: Students with chronic absences tend to struggle academically and may not benefit fully from all school has to offer. A positive school climate has been shown to reduce absenteeism and promote academic success. In this study, we explored how a positive school climate and high satisfaction with school may influence absences and academic performance. METHODS: We used mediated path analysis to describe relationships involving school clima…
Mentoring Multi-College Bystander Efficacy Evaluation – an Approach to Growing the Next Generation of Gender-Based Interpersonal Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) Researchers
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provided funding (U01 CE002668) to evaluate bystander program efficacy to reduce gender-based violence on college campuses (Aim 1) and to create a mentoring network (Aim 2) for young campus-based researchers interested in violence intervention or prevention (VIP). While an evaluation of this mentoring program is ongoing, our purpose here was to document the strategies used to create, implement, and b…

A qualitative assessment of home visitors’ knowledge, skills, and abilities in delivering prenatal physical activity curriculum modules
Intimate Partner Violence Experiences Among Men Living with HIV in Rural Appalachia
There has been limited study of the syndemic link between HIV and intimate partner violence (IPV) among rural populations in the United States. We utilized the Revised Conflict Tactics Scale-2 to examine the past year prevalence, type (psychological aggression, physical assault, and sexual assault), and the impact of IPV on HIV clinical outcomes among men living with HIV in rural Appalachia. Approximately 39% of participants experienced some type…
The Green Light for Green Dot
The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate factors influencing the adoption of an effective bystander-based sexual violence prevention intervention. High schools participating in a cluster-randomized controlled trial that found significant declines in sexual violence over time and with full implementation were invited to adopt this program (Green Dot) at no cost. Three emergent themes arose from interviews with 10 intervention imple…
Using a Multiphase Mixed Methods Triangulation Design to Measure Bystander Intervention Components and Dose of Violence Prevention Programs on College Campuses
Lessons Learned in Creating a College Consortium
Length of Residence and Cardiovascular Health among Afro-Caribbean Immigrants in New York City
Risk Perceptions of Cellphone Use While Driving
Cellphone use while driving has been recognized as a growing and important public health issue by the World Health Organization and U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Surveys typically collect data on overall texting while driving, but do not differentiate between various forms of cellphone use. This study sought to improve the survey indicators when monitoring cellphone use among young drivers. Experts and young drivers were recruit…
Mandatory Reporting in the Context of Home Visitation Programs
The mandatory reporting of intimate partner violence (IPV) is a controversial issue that is receiving increased attention. A related concern is whether children's exposure to IPV constitutes child maltreatment, making it reportable to child protective services. These issues have been relatively unexplored within the context of home visitation programs. A secondary analysis of qualitative data collected from community stakeholders, clients, and ho…
