Topography of Legend
This publication examines the topography of the founding legend of Vilnius in order to address the question of where the legendary Tauras Hill may have been located – which is the place where, according to 16th-century narrative chronicles, Grand Duke Gediminas of Lithuania hunted a wild aurochs (lt. tauras) before dreaming of the Iron Wolf. The study is based on an analysis of archaeological, historical, and narrative sources, as well as on the …
Burials in the territory of the Vilnius Kalnų (Hill) Park
In 1989 Daiva Misiukaitė (Daiva Luchtanienė) conducted exploratory archaeological research in the Vilnius Kalnų (Hill) park – teritory in which, it is believed, one of the main medieval castles of Vilnius – the Crooked Castle was located. Graves were discovered in three places: in the northwestern part of the Dainų Valley, near the current parking lot, on the The Hill of Gediminas’ Grave and in the southern part of Altana hill. In the latter plac…
Stable isotope measurements reveal diverse agricultural management strategies in the Roman Iron Age (1–400 cal AD) southeast Baltic
This study presents a series of new radiocarbon dates and the first stable carbon and nitrogen isotope measurements of C 3 cereal grains from Roman Iron Age (1–400 AD) archaeobotanical assemblages in Lithuania, southeastern Baltic region. These data are complemented by stable isotope measurements of faunal remains to assess local environmental conditions and evaluate human impact on the landscape through agricultural practices. The δ 15 N and δ 1…
New insights into the subsistence economy of the Late Bronze Age (1100–400 cal BC) communities in the southeastern Baltic
This paper presents the findings of a research project aimed at reconstructing the subsistence economy of the Late Bronze Age communities in eastern Lithuania. We focused on examining archaeobotanical and zooarchaeological assemblages from three hillforts alongside δ13C and δ15N stable isotope analysis of plant and animal remains. Our results suggest that local populations primarily relied on growing domestic plants and animals for their subsiste…
