Assessing microclimate risks in indoor cultural heritage environments through low-cost monitoring
D thermo-reflectography of cultural heritage. The Codex 4D project
3D thermography from MWIR reflectography images obtained with the same IR camera. • Creation of a 4D model of the manuscript, explorable in real time, including visible and invisible elements. • Integration of the results of chemical and biological investigations into the model. • Semantic annotations of the manuscript 4D model. • Virtual reality environments in the web and engaging holographic showcase for museum. In an effort to try and improve…
Development and application of affordable microclimate and indoor air quality monitoring platforms for historic libraries in cultural heritage preservation
Stability and durability assessment of alum-tawed skin by light transmission analysis
Alum-tawed skin has been widely used in the past for the production of bookbindings elements because of its physical–mechanical properties and production process, easier and faster than that required for leather. Nevertheless, unlike for other skin-based materials employed in books production, such as parchment and leather, for alum-tawed skin the manufacturing process appears to be less standardized and rather few data are available in the liter…
Evaluation of the Irradiation Treatment Effects on Ancient Parchment Samples
In this work, the effect of X-ray irradiation as a disinfection treatment in original ancient parchment samples, belonging to a discarded book cover of a 16th-century archival register, has been evaluated. Specifically, the bacterial and fungal species isolated from the book cover have been characterized and then irradiated with increasing doses of X-rays with the aim to evaluate the effectiveness of the antimicrobial protocol on the isolated mic…
Quantitative characterization of archaeological bronzes based on thermal and compositional analysis
Pulsed thermography has been applied to the quantitative characterization of the insertions of two ancient bronzes, the Boxer at Rest and the Hellenistic Prince . The analysis of the thermographic signal time dependence performed by a specifically developed model enabled the evaluation of the insertions’ thickness and of elements which could provide indications about the procedure followed for their insertion. This could be achieved by exploiting…
The “Lost Guardians” of Dante’s Inferno
On the occasion of the 700th centenary of the death of Dante Alighieri, medium wave infrared imaging analysis of illuminations of the XIV-century code of the Divina Commedia (MS. 1102), hosted in the Biblioteca Angelica in Rome, was performed and discussed. The investigation was carried out by means of thermographic and reflectographic techniques on illuminations where the iconographic representation appeared severely damaged. In particular, thro…
Papier-Mâché Puppets’ Characterization by Infrared Imaging Techniques
Among the different forms of art, the puppet theatre constitutes a long-standing and often little-known tradition. The use of puppets as support for acting dates back to the Greek age, and it was mainly developed during the modern period. The reason for such a large diffusion was due to the possibility of using affordable materials, such as papier-mâché, for the puppets’ manufacture. In this paper, a method based on the combined use of pulsed the…
Evaluation of microscopy techniques and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy on textile fibers from the Vesuvian area
Combined use of infrared imaging techniques for the study of underlying features in the Santa Maria in Cosmedin altarpiece
This paper presents a study carried out on the painted altarpiece preserved inside the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Rome, by combining three imaging techniques operating in the near‐ and mid‐infrared spectral ranges. The altarpiece has several pictorial layers and restorations, which have superimposed over time for stylistic adjustment and conservative purposes up to its present appearance. The results obtained in this study enable the de…
