Participation behaviour of different migrant groups in breast cancer screening – palpation of the breast and mammography. Results from the German national cohort (Nako)
In contrast to earlier studies, our findings suggest that MSP participation and motivation does not significantly differ by migration status or language skills. This may indicate that information on MSP is broadly accessible through established invitation procedures in Germany. However, lower uptake of breast palpation by a physician in some migrant populations highlights potential gaps in broader preventive care engagement
Frailty among older adults in Germany
BACKGROUND: Frailty is a geriatric syndrome associated with increased morbidity, disability, and mortality. While its prevalence has been studied extensively in individual cohorts and patient populations, national prevalence data are scarce and regional variations within Germany remain largely unexplored. This study examined the frequency of frailty and its regional variation across the 18 NAKO (German National Cohort) study centers using a unifo…
Care delay during the Covid-19 pandemic in Germany – a cross-sectional online survey in the Nako study
During the COVID-19 pandemic, non-COVID-19 related healthcare utilization declined in Germany, resulting in care delay, including delays and cancellations of routine, chronic, and even acute care. The aim of this study was to investigate factors (i.e. regional differences and participant characteristics) associated with care delay during the pandemic in Germany using a cross-sectional survey. In October 2022, a total of 117,466 participants from …
Is neighborhood socioeconomic status associated with health behavior in Berlin? Cross-sectional data of the German National Cohort (Nako)
Our analyses suggest a rather small association between Berlin's nSES and HLI, and slightly stronger associations with BMI and smoking. Future studies using longitudinal data and more neighbourhood measures are needed to better disentangle contextual influences from residential selection and to inform targeted prevention strategies
Depression and anxiety symptoms in internally migrated women and men after the German unification
Subgroup analyses revealed group differences to depend on sex, but show negligible effect sizes, with internal migration only explaining less than 0.2 % of the variance for depression and anxiety symptoms. Internal migration alone is thus no substantial factor in explaining mental health differences. Future studies should use longitudinal data to determine temporal associations between internal migration and mental health
What can we learn from an intersectionality-informed description of study participants? Results from the German National Cohort
Our results showed that heterogeneity within social categories can be revealed by applying the concept of intersectionality when comparing study participants with an external population. This way, an intersectionality-informed approach contributes to describing social complexity among study participants more precisely. Furthermore, results can be used to reduce participation barriers in a more targeted way
Depressive symptoms, education, gender and history of migration - an intersectional analysis using data from the German National Cohort (Nako)
We observed a robust educational gradient in depressive symptoms, but gender and history of migration had substantial contribution on the magnitude of educational inequalities. An intersectional perspective on inequalities in depressive symptoms enhances current knowledge by showing that different social dimensions may intersect and contribute to inequalities in depressive symptoms. Future studies on inequalities in depression may greatly benefit…
From cigarettes to symptoms
Our findings support an association between smoking and depression. Robust dose-response relationships were found, with higher cigarette consumption associated with more severe depressive symptoms, and longer time since cessation linked to lower depression levels. These results highlight smoking as a meaningful and modifiable contributor to current and lifetime depression, suggesting that quitting smoking or reducing cigarette consumption may ben…
Childhood maltreatment and adult diseases in the general population
Childhood maltreatment is associated with an unhealthier lifestyle in adulthood and an increased risk of mental and somatic health problems, although the underlying pathways remain unclear. This study examined whether smoking and overweight mediate the association between childhood abuse/neglect and frequent adult diseases, including cancer, myocardial infarction, stroke, type 2 diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, depression, and anx…
Factors associated with device-based measured physical activity and sedentary behavior in a cross-sectional citizen science study of adolescents during the Covid-19 pandemic
Although our findings warrant confirmation in larger samples, this Citizen Science study points to potential action points that may be targeted in public health interventions aimed at increasing PA to improve health in adolescents
Changes in physical activity and sedentary behavior during the first Covid-19 pandemic- restrictions in Germany
Mobility patterns shifted towards inactivity or low-intensity activities during the nationwide restrictions in the spring of 2020, potentially leading to considerable and lasting health risks
Investigating people’s attitudes towards participating in longitudinal health research
Our findings suggest that for participants, health research constitutes a site of distinction in the sense of making a difference and being distinct or distinguishable, whereas non-participants inhabited an orientation towards science that reflected their subjective marginalisation through science. No clear relationship can thereby be presumed between social location and a particular attitude towards study participation; rather, such attitudes tr…
Birth Order, Caesarean Section, or Daycare Attendance in Relation to Child- and Adult-Onset Type 1 Diabetes
(1) Background: Global incidence of type 1 diabetes (T1D) is rising and nearly half occurred in adults. However, it is unclear if certain early-life childhood T1D risk factors were also associated with adult-onset T1D. This study aimed to assess associations between birth order, delivery mode or daycare attendance and type 1 diabetes (T1D) risk in a population-based cohort and whether these were similar for childhood- and adult-onset T1D (cut-off…
Feasibility of a Culturally Adapted Dietary Weight-Loss Intervention among Ghanaian Migrants in Berlin, Germany
Acceptance of our invitation to the intervention was poor but, once initiated, compliance was good. Assessment centers in the participants' vicinity and early stakeholder involvement might facilitate improved acceptance of the invitation. A randomized controlled trial is required to determine the actual effects of the intervention
School- and Leisure Time Factors Are Associated With Sitting Time of German and Irish Children and Adolescents During School
Objective: The study aims to investigate to what extent school- and leisure time-related factors are associated with sedentary behavior during school in German and Irish children and adolescents. Methods: The study based on a sample of 198 children and adolescents surveyed in 2015. Sedentary and activity behavior were measured using the activPAL physical activity monitor. Information on socio-economic status, school- and leisure-time related fact…
Global, regional, and national comparative risk assessment of 84 behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risks or clusters of risks for 195 countries and territories, 1990–2017
BackgroundThe Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017 comparative risk assessment (CRA) is a comprehensive approach to risk factor quantification that offers a useful tool for synthesising evidence on risks and risk–outcome associations. With each annual GBD study, we update the GBD CRA to incorporate improved methods, new risks and risk–outcome pairs, and new data on risk exposure levels and risk–outcome associatio…
Variability and reliability study of overall physical activity and activity intensity levels using 24 h-accelerometry-assessed data
Individual PA, as assessed using 24 h-accelerometry, is highly variable between days, but the day of assessment or the day of the week explain only small parts of this variance. Our data indicate that 1 week of assessment is necessary for reliable estimation of habitual PA
The NutriAct Family Study
Until August 4th 2017, 4783 EPIC-Participants were contacted by mail of which 446 persons recruited 2 to 5 family members (including themselves) resulting in 1032 participants, of whom 82% had started answering or already completed the questionnaires. Of the 4337 remaining EPIC-participants who had been contacted, 1040 (24%) did not respond at all, and 3297 (76%) responded but declined, in 51% of the cases because of the request to recruit at lea…
Associations of dyslipidaemia and lipid-lowering treatment with risk of postoperative cognitive dysfunction
Using concept mapping in the development of the EU-PAD framework (EUropean-Physical Activity Determinants across the life course)
The current framework provides a preliminary overview of factors which may account for PA behaviour across the life course and are most relevant to the European community. These insights could potentially be a foundation for future Pan-European research on how these factors might interact with each other, and assist policy makers to identify appropriate interventions to maximize PA behaviours and thus the health of European citizens
Antioxidant intake from diet and supplements and elevated serum C-reactive protein and plasma homocysteine concentrations in US adults
Objective To investigate the association of antioxidant intakes from diet and supplements with elevated blood C-reactive protein (CRP) and homocysteine (Hcy) concentrations. Design A cross-sectional study. The main exposures were vitamins C and E, carotene, flavonoid and Se intakes from diet and supplements. Elevated blood CRP and Hcy concentrations were the outcome measures. Setting The US population and its subgroups. Subjects We included 8335 …
General and Abdominal Adiposity and Risk of Death in Europe
BACKGROUND: Previous studies have relied predominantly on the body-mass index (BMI, the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in meters) to assess the association of adiposity with the risk of death, but few have examined whether the distribution of body fat contributes to the prediction of death. METHODS: We examined the association of BMI, waist circumference, and waist-to-hip ratio with the risk of death among 359,387 partici…
