Open Access•Mubarek Abera, Gemechu Ameya et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2026

BACKGROUND: As the threat of child malnutrition increases, the focus remains mostly on short-term consequences. Long-term sequelae are increasingly recognised but lack strong evidence, and many studies face methodological limitations. METHOD: A retrospective cohort of survivors of the 1984-1985 Great-Ethiopian Famine was compared with two novel control groups: born post-famine; and age category- and sex-matched controls. Exposure to famine at dif…

  • Barriers to and enablers of childhood immunization uptake in Ethiopia’s Amhara, Oromia, and Somali Regions

Open Access•Amare Zewdie, Minyahil Tadesse Boltena et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2026

Ethiopia has the fourth-highest number of zero-dose children globally. Negative experiences and perceptions of immunization are recognized barriers to vaccination uptake but warrant context-specific investigation. We explored barriers and enablers to immunization uptake in selected regions of Ethiopia. We conducted a formative qualitative study involving 18 focus group discussions with men and women, in-depth interviews with 23 mothers of childre…

Open Access•Agnes Kiragga, Agnes N Kiragga et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Background: Effective public health data science in Africa requires a comprehensive understanding of institutional capabilities across multiple dimensions. This study conducted a multidimensional assessment of three African health institutions to examine the availability of health data, healthcare training, data governance needs, and infrastructure capabilities, to inform the use of data science tools to address health challenges. Methods: The st…

  • Low-level viremia in people with HIV in Ethiopia is associated with subsequent lack of viral suppression and attrition from care

Open Access•Ilili Jemal Abdulahi, Per Björkman et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2025

BACKGROUND: Low-level viremia during antiretroviral therapy (ART) has been associated with inferior outcomes, but knowledge on the impact of low-level viremia in the current era of dolutegravir-based ART in low-income countries is limited. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether low-level viremia predicts virologic non-suppression and attrition from care in people with HIV receiving ART in Ethiopia. METHODS: 150 copies/mL) or low-level viremia (151-1,0…

  • Health research mentorship in low-income and middle-income countries

Open Access•Eneyi E Kpokiri, Kamryn McDonald et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2024

INTRODUCTION: Research mentorship is critical for advancing science, but there are few practical strategies for cultivating mentorship in health research resource-limited settings. WHO/TDR Global commissioned a group to develop a practical guide on research mentorship. This global qualitative evidence synthesis included data from a crowdsourcing open call and scoping review to identify and propose strategies to enhance research mentorship in low/…

  • Maternal mental health and nutritional status of infants aged under 6 months

Open Access•Mubarek Abera, Melkamu Berhane et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2024

Maternal/caregivers’ mental health (MMH) and child nutrition are both poor in low- and middle-income countries. Links between the two are plausible but poorly researched. Our aim was to inform future malnutrition management programmes by better understanding associations between MMH and nutritional status of infants aged under six month (u6m). We conducted a health facility-based cross-sectional survey of 1060 infants in rural Ethiopia, between O…

  • Strengthening implementation of integrated care for small and nutritionally at‐risk infants under six months and their mothers

Open Access•Marie Mcgrath, Shimelis Girma et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2024

An integrated care pathway to manage small and nutritionally at-risk infants under 6 months (u6m) and their mothers (MAMI Care Pathway) is consistent with 2023 WHO malnutrition guidelines and is being tested in a randomised controlled trial (RCT) in Ethiopia. To optimise trial implementation, we investigated contextual fit with key local stakeholders. We used scenario-based interviews with 17 health workers and four district managers to explore p…

  • Association between birth length, linear growth velocities, and primary school achievement at age 10 years

Open Access•Rahma Ali, Beakal Zinab et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Greater birth length and higher growth velocity from 6 to 24 months were associated with higher school achievement and being in the appropriate grade-for-age, respectively. Children who experienced growth failure were less likely to achieve a high MES score. Interventions aimed at improving school achievement should address maternal and fetal nutrition and health, and monitor post-natal growth

  • Is heterologous prime-boost Covid-19 vaccination a concern or an opportunity for Ethiopia

Open Access•Tesfaye Gelanew, Liya Wassie et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

  • Retention on antiretroviral therapy in person with HIV and viral hepatitis coinfection in Ethiopia

Open Access•Eleni Seyoum, Meaza Demissie et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

We observed that coinfected individuals are less likely to stay on ART than HIV monoinfected individuals. The low retention in the coinfected group from this study may affect the success of survival gained in people living with HIV (PLHIV) in the long term. More concerted efforts need to be made to retain coinfected individuals at least at the level of monoinfected persons on long-term ART care. Future studies are needed to better understand the …

  • Health seeking behavior for cervical cancer in Ethiopia

Open Access•Zewdie Birhanu, Alemseged Abdissa et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2012

Lack of awareness and health seeking behavior for cervical cancer was common due to misconceptions about the cause of the disease. Profound social consequences and exclusion were common. Access to services for diagnosis and treatment were poor for a variety of psycho-social, and health system reasons. Prior to the introduction or scale up of cervical cancer prevention programs, socio-cultural barriers and health service related factors that influ…
