Explanatory Factors of the Black Achievement Gap in Montréal's Public and Private Schools
This exploratory analysis uses multiple regression modeling to help shed light on the correlates of the Black achievement gap in Montréal's public and private secondary schools. Using school-level testing data from Québec's Ministry of Education, the authors show that there is a Black achievement gap, and that this gap is highly associated with school socio-economic status, peer family structure, and average age of the student body's parents. In the emerging tradition of language socialization research, this study examines the changing bilingual self-perceptions of three children, identical twin girls and their older brother, from early adolescence through early adulthood. This case study gauges the perceptions of teachers to the “harm and benefit thesis” of Coleman’s social-capital hypothesis. The study uses data from one de facto segregated southern school system that hastily implemented a court order in 2000. The study collects the perceptions of teachers at five predominantly middle-class White schools that received 460 lower socioeconomic status African American students ordered bussed when their inner-city sc…

This study examined how three major background characteristics of students—race, poverty, and family structure—can produce inequalities in school outcomes, as measured by standardized tests. It found that the percentage of students from families headed by single women is an extremely powerful predictor of levels of achievement in schools. Cultural influences on French/English language dominance of three Louisiana children
In this study the authors use qualitative and quantitative research methods to help identify the cultural factors that influence the usage of household French by three French/English bilingual children in Louisiana. This study uses control theory to explain teenage fertility in one [U.S.] southeastern state. Control theory explains deviance from societal norms in terms of weak social bonding or integration. An important assumption of the study is that teenage parenting violates American parenting norms, and can thus be conceptualized as deviant behavior.
