The impact of New York City's Open Streets Program on local traffic
In recent years, there has been growing popularity in urban policies that prioritize pedestrians by reallocating road space away from motorized vehicles, with a focus on active transportation such as walking and cycling, as well as public transit. However, there is limited research exploring the traffic implications of such policies. New York City's (NYC) Open Streets Program, launched in April 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, aimed to provide …

How parents became ‘involved’
In early childhood education (ECE), parental involvement (PI) is routinely framed in policy as a mechanism for enhancing educational quality. Yet less attention has been paid to how PI itself becomes a governable policy object, particularly in non-Western contexts. Drawing on a genealogically informed historical discourse analysis of nationally influential Chinese ECE and family education policy texts, professional guidelines and parent-directed …
Cognitive flexibility advantage developing from local switching to global monitoring
Interpreting requires regular and frequent language switching and is thus likely beneficial to cognitive flexibility. However, advantage research found mixed results, probably due to two confounding factors: interpreter expertise and task differences. This study targeted the critical period of intermediate interpreter expertise and compared participants’ switching performance in the rule–based Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) and the cue-based …
Characterizing global tropical cyclone events of 2024
Full impact assessment of tropical cyclones each year requires a comprehensive sociodemographic analysis. We evaluated the sociodemographic characteristics of tropical cyclone-impacted regions during the 2024 calendar year in the recent historical context of 1980–2024. In 2024, tropical cyclone-force winds affected an estimated 429 902 820 people (5.5% of global population), the 12th highest since 1980, in disproportionately more deprived areas. …

Using multimedia hints to facilitate conceptual problem solving in physics
Multimedia hints are widely used in educational materials to support conceptual learning, yet their comparative effectiveness across modalities remains underexplored. Prior studies suggest that graphical hints can enhance learners’ performance on physics problems, but it is unclear how they interact with other modalities such as text and voice. Understanding these interactions is essential for designing effective instructional tools. In this stud…

Clinical epidemiology of community-acquired pneumonia in children before, during, and after the Covid-19 pandemic, and independent risk factors analysis for severe community-acquired pneumonia
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic may have created an 'immunity debt', altering the epidemiology and aetiology of paediatric community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). However, multi-centre data on these changes and contemporary risk factors for severe CAP remain limited. We therefore aimed to analyse clinical characteristics and pathogen composition of CAP in children before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic, and to identify independent risk fac…

Combining aggregate and individual-level data to estimate individual-level associations between air pollution and Covid-19 mortality in the United States
Imposing stricter regulations for PM 2.5 has the potential to mitigate damaging health and climate change effects. Recent evidence establishing a link between exposure to air pollution and COVID-19 outcomes is one of many arguments for the need to reduce the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for PM 2.5 . However, many studies reporting a relationship between COVID-19 outcomes and PM 2.5 have been criticized because they are based on …
