Motivation, student–teacher rapport, and praise-seeking and rejection-avoidance beliefs of university-level music students
One-to-one studio music lessons provide the potential to develop strong teacher–student rapport. However, these relationships can also inhibit progress if students are more motivated to seek their teacher’s approval than pursuing musical goals. The purpose of this survey study was to explore relationships between music students’ motivations to pursue degrees in music, perceived rapport with their studio teachers, and praise-seeking and rejection-…
Perfectionism and impostor phenomenon among undergraduate music education majors
Music students and music teachers are subject to a variety of stressors that can negatively affect their health and well-being. In the current study, we aimed to investigate the incidence of perfectionism and impostor phenomenon (IP) among undergraduate music education majors. A secondary purpose was to examine the degree to which perfectionist tendencies (self-oriented perfectionism, other-oriented perfectionism, and socially prescribed perfecti…
An examination of collegiate musicians’ ability to discern conductor intent
The purpose of this two-experiment study was to examine collegiate musicians’ ability to discern conductor intent. In Experiment 1, participants ( N = 44) viewed two videos of Sir Simon Rattle conducting an ensemble performing an excerpt of the Finale to Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2. One video featured the original performance, whereas the other video was synchronized with a different audio recording from a video of a performance led by Leonard…
Is Major Minor? The Relationship Between Music Major Status and a Measure of Musical Sophistication
Although music education researchers often utilize music major status as a single-item proxy variable for musician status—and with this designation presume musical competencies or abilities of research participants—there is a lack of research demonstrating links between status as a music major and those assumed competencies. In this study, we compared undergraduate music majors and non-music majors ( N = 237) at the group and individual levels us…
Effects of Model Recordings on Undergraduate Conductors’ Tempo Selections
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of model recordings on undergraduate conductors’ tempo decisions for selected wind band excerpts. Participants ( N = 42) studied three music score excerpts for 5 minutes each either (a) with an increased-tempo recording, (b) with a decreased-tempo recording, or (c) with a metronome set to the faster, printed tempo in the score, followed by a tapping task to demonstrate their preferred tempo. …
Burnout and Impostor Phenomenon Among Undergraduate Music Education Majors
The purpose of this study was to examine the degree to which impostor feelings and selected demographic variables predict burnout among undergraduate music education majors. Participants ( N = 143) completed the Clance Impostor Phenomenon Scale (CIPS) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory for Students. Overall, participants reported relatively high levels of impostor feelings and burnout. Results of multiple regression analyses revealed that CIPS sco…
Effects of Score Study and Conducting Gesture on Collegiate Musicians’ Ability to Detect Errors in a Choral Score
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of score study and conducting gesture on collegiate musicians’ ability to detect errors in a choral score. Is there a combined effect of gesture and score study that impacts undergraduate conductors’ identification of errors in a score? Participants ( N = 53) viewed a sequence of four choral score excerpts presented via Zoom video conferencing. We asked participants to identify errors under one…
The influences of facial expression and conducting gesture on college musicians' perceptions of choral conductor and ensemble expressivity
The purpose of this study was to examine the influences of facial expression and conducting gesture on perceptions of choral conductor and ensemble expressivity. College musicians ( N = 156) viewed excerpts of two choral conductors who had been recorded conducting with either an expressive conducting gesture and a neutral/static face or an expressive facial expression and a neutral/static conducting gesture. They then rated the expressivity of th…
Band Directors’ Perceptions of Instrumental Conducting Curricula
The purpose of this study was to examine inservice band directors’ perceptions of their undergraduate instrumental conducting curricula. Members ( N = 141) of the Facebook Band Directors Group who had completed undergraduate conducting and rehearsal techniques coursework responded to an online survey. Respondents felt more confident demonstrating technical conducting behaviors versus expressive ones, perceived their instruction in conducting skil…
Conductor Expressivity Affects Evaluation of Rehearsal Instruction
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of conductor expressivity on the evaluation of rehearsal instruction. We video recorded two conductors in rehearsal with a university band. We extracted a 3.5-min excerpt of their rehearsals that featured alternation between conductor talk and expressive conducting. For one of the conductors (the “experimental” conductor), we also re-recorded the same rehearsal excerpt with the conductor using u…
An Observational Study of Score Study Practices Among Undergraduate Instrumental Music Education Majors
The purpose of this study was to investigate undergraduate instrumental music education majors’ score study practices as they related to the effectiveness of their simulated conducting. Participants ( N = 30) were video recorded in two sessions in which they completed a 20-min score study session and a simulated conducting performance. In the first score study session, all 30 conductors studied Mini-Suite for Band, Movement 1. In Session 2, parti…
Evaluation of Intrarehearsal Achievement by Listeners of Varying Levels of Expertise
The primary purpose of this study was to investigate expertise-related differences in the evaluation of moment-to-moment rehearsal achievement. Nonmusic majors, music education majors, and expert music teachers ( N = 60) listened to 18 “before” and “after” pairs of rehearsal trials of various high school bands in their pursuit of proximal rehearsal goals, or targets. These pairs of rehearsal trials (“dyads”) were presented to participants on audi…
Effects of Internal and External Focus of Attention During Novices’ Instructional Preparation on Subsequent Rehearsal Behaviors
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of internal versus external focus of attention during novice teachers’ instructional preparation on their subsequent rehearsal behaviors. Thirty-two undergraduate instrumental music education students led bands in a series of three, 6-minute rehearsals on their assigned excerpt. Prior to these rehearsals, participants engaged in condition-specific score study and rehearsal preparation activ…
Effects of Internal and External Focus of Attention on Novices’ Rehearsal Evaluations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of internal and external focus of attention on novices’ rehearsal evaluations. Thirty-two undergraduate instrumental music education students led bands in a series of three 6-minute rehearsals on their assigned excerpt. Prior to these rehearsals, participants were led in score study and rehearsal preparation activities. Internal group ( n = 16) participants’ preparation related to knowledge…
Evaluative and Behavioral Correlates to Intrarehearsal Achievement in High School Bands
The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships of teaching effectiveness, ensemble performance quality, and selected rehearsal procedures to various measures of intrarehearsal achievement (i.e., musical improvement exhibited by an ensemble during the course of a single rehearsal). Twenty-nine high school bands were observed in two rehearsals of a common music selection. Separate panels of experts evaluated ensemble performance quality…
Effects of Recorded Models on Novice Teachers’ Rehearsal Verbalizations, Evaluations, and Conducting
In this study, the authors investigated effects of aural model—supported rehearsal preparation on selected behavioral and evaluative elements of novice teachers’ rehearsals. Sixteen preservice music teachers conducted high school bands in four 15-minute rehearsals (two rehearsals on two different pieces). To prepare for their rehearsals on one piece, participants were given only the conductor score, while for the other piece, they were given both …
The Effect of a Recorded Model on Band Students' Performance Self-Evaluations, Achievement, and Attitude
In this study, we examined effectiveness of recorded models in the context of ensemble rehearsals. Over a 5-week treatment period, directors of three middle/junior high and two high school bands systematically included professional recordings as part of their preparation of selected pieces. Students completed weekly self-evaluation reports assessing their individual progress and their ensembles' progress on model and no-model pieces. Using numeri…
