  • Schleiermacher, Shaftesbury, and the German Enlightenment

    Ernest L Boyer, Ernest Boyer•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•2003

In the chapter on “Shaftesbury and Spinoza” in his monumental biography of Friedrich Schleiermacher, Wilhelm Dilthey makes a puzzling claim. Not only does he identify the Earl of Shaftesbury, along with Spinoza, as one of Schleiermacher's most significant influences, he does this in a way that suggests that Shaftesbury may actually have had the greater weight. Ernest L Boyer•ARTICLE•Leonardo•1996

the viewpoint of the fish, which pretty well sums up my assignment here today. Specifically, I've been asked to comment briefly on how the intellectual property rights debate relates to public interest, to the larger, educational social context. The American professoriate is enormously differentiated by discipline and type of institution on such primary dimensions of professionalism as patterns of work, identification, authority, career, and association. Integration across the professoriate no longer comes primarily from similarity of function and common socialization, but from the overlap of subcommunities and the mediating linkages provided by the ties of discipline and institution
