The Mockery of Animals Among the Rotenese of Eastern Indonesia
This article examines formulaic phrases intended to mock specific, mainly domestic, animals among the Rotenese of eastern Indonesia. Knowledge of these phrases is preserved among children who are forbidden such expressions yet relish the potential threat of their use to challenge their fathers. This paper outlines the historical formation of courts on the island of Roti. Drawing on the model of a court convened by the Dutch East India Company, each domain on the island fashioned its own court with local clan representation.
