Clifford Sather was a scholar of gentle persuasion.He made his contributions to anthropology through his careful and considered analyses of ethnographic materials drawn from extensive research on the Bajau Laut of Sabah and on the Iban of Sarawak.On each of these societies, he wrote revealingly and offered comparative observations relevant to other societies in Southeast Asia.He was a distinguished ethnographer whose work combined depth of understanding with insight.Clifford, or 'Cliff' as he was known, was born in Sacramento on 27 August 1938.His family moved to Portland, Oregon.Oregon, and Portland in particular, became part of a recurrent pattern of departures and returns during a long career in which he moved around the world.Cliff was drawn to anthropology at Reed College, where he was one of a talented cohort of David French's students-Robert Barnes, Kirk Endicott, Michael Moffat, and Charles N. Modjeska-all of whom went on to notable careers in anthropology.In 1961, after graduation from Reed College, Cliff enrolled at Harvard, where he completed his MA in 1964 and his PhD in social anthropology in 1971.Cliff had a nomadic academic career.He began as an Instructor at Union College in Schenectady, New York.He then became, in succession, Lecturer at Vassar College (1968-72), Lecturer in Social Anthropology at Universiti Sains Malaysia
