Geometric morphometric analysis of facial sexual dimorphism in a contemporary sample
Focusing on craniofacial bones, this study investigates morphological variation related to sexual dimorphism in order to deepen our understanding of human biological diversity and to provide new data from a contemporary reference sample. Accordingly, the research was guided by three objectives (i) identify the facial regions exhibiting the greatest sexual dimorphism using landmark-based geometric morphometric method; (ii) evaluate the reliability…
Genetic relatedness, social status and cemetery organisation
Archaeologists are increasingly integrating the analysis of ancient DNA into cemetery studies; however, while such efforts highlight relatedness and descent, biological kinship forms only one aspect of social organisation in human societies. Here, the authors demonstrate this using the Tamir necropolis in Mongolia (100 BC–AD 100) as a case study. Employing a pipeline that combines linear discriminant analysis, machine-learning classifiers and cul…

From Stars to State
This article examines the role of rural communities in shaping early Egyptian statehood through the evolution of funerary beliefs. Drawing on the analysis of 504 tombs from the cemetery of Adaïma (Upper Egypt, 3300–2700 BCE), we trace a growing variability in mortuary practices from the First to the Third Dynasty. By the Third Dynasty, a remarkable alignment between the heliacal rising of Sirius, the summer solstice, and the Nile inundation began…

Frozen graves of Yakutia, a chronological sequence
Distribution, cultural and chronological attribution of frozen graves of Yakutia between the beginning of 17th and end of 19th century. The funerary rites and the artefacts allow to differentiate four chrono-cultural periods (before 1700 AD, from 1700 to 1750 AD, from 1750 to 1800 AD and after 1800 AD) which could be associated with historical events: opening of the trading post of Nertchinsk, expansion of the Kangalasky clan, economic collapse, …
Archaelogy, genetics and history 15 years of research in Yakutia (2002-2017)
For the past 15 years, our research has focused on the evolution of the first Yakut populations, their interaction with local tribes as well as with the Russian population, which marks the beginning of Yakutia's development from the first half of the 17th century. We conducted the excavation of tombs and we analysed the cultural, historical and paleogenetic data uncovered. A review and a synthesis of the main results published in articles and mon…

Persistence and Disappearance of Traditional Patrilocality
This article describes current matrimonial strategies and residence patterns in two communities in the Sakha Republic. In Tolon, a rural settlement in central Sakha, community exogamy is predominant and patrilocality is detectable in postnuptial residence patterns. In the sub-Arctic town of Khonuu no gendered residence patterns are observed. Khonuu has an airport and serves as a regional capital. In Khonuu matrimonial decisions follow the immigra…

New genetic evidence of affinities and discontinuities between bronze age Siberian populations
OBJECTIVES: This work focuses on the populations of South Siberia during the Eneolithic and Bronze Age and specifically on the contribution of uniparental lineage and phenotypical data to the question of the genetic affinities and discontinuities between western and eastern populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed molecular analyses on the remains of 28 ancient humans (10 Afanasievo (3600-2500 BC) and 18 Okunevo (2500-1800 BC) individuals…
Representations of Paired Horse Heads in Yakut Art
Various artifacts depicting paired horse heads are known in many ancient cultures of Siberia. The earliest in Yakutia is a bone amulet-pendant from the habitation layer of Ulakhan Segelennyakh, dating to the middle or second half of the 1st millennium AD. In 17th and 18th-century Yakut burials, ring buckle pendants with double-headed horses, decorating either burial clothing or vessels, are frequent. Museum collections show similar pendants often…

A panorama of tooth wear during the medieval period
Tooth wear is a natural phenomenon and a universal occurrence that has existed from the origin of humankind and depends on the way of life, especially diet. Tooth wear was very serious in ancient populations up to the medieval period. The aim of this paper is to present a global view of tooth wear in medieval times in Europe through different parameters: scoring systems, quantity and direction of wear, gender, differences between maxilla and mand…

Is cribra orbitalia synonymous with anemia? Analysis and interpretation of cranial pathology in Sudan
Cribra orbitalia is a porotic or sieve‐like lesion in the bony orbital roof. Its cause has been the object of research and discussion since the end of the 19th century. Since about 1960, most scientists have started to agree on the hypothesis that the lesion is a result of hypertrophy of the red bone marrow, and therefore is proof of anemia. However, recent investigations showed that in some cases, the histologic bone structure does not support t…
Comparison between morphological and genetic data to estimate biological relationship
Osseous and dental nonmetric (discrete) traits have long been used to assess population variability and affinity in anthropological and archaeological contexts. However, the full extent to which nonmetric traits can reliably be used as a proxy for genetic data when assessing close or familial relationships is currently poorly understood. This study represents the unique opportunity to directly compare genetic and nonmetric data for the same indiv…
Shanidar 1
The Shanidar 1 Neandertal partial skeleton presents osteophytic lesions on its vertebrae and appendicular skeleton which appear independent of the multiple traumatic and degenerative joint disease lesions on the individual. In particular, the large flowing osteophyte on the L3 body, a smaller one on the L5 body, and enthesopathic osteophytes on both calcaneal tuberosities, both patellae and the left ulnar olecranon, support a diagnosis of hyperos…

Paleogenetical study of pre‐Columbian samples from Pampa Grande (Salta, Argentina)
Ancient DNA recovered from 21 individuals excavated from burial sites in the Pampa Grande (PG) region (Salta province) of North‐Western Argentina (NWA) was analyzed using various genetic markers (mitochondrial DNA, autosomal STRs, and Y chromosomal STRs). The results were compared to ancient and modern DNA from various populations in the Andean and North Argentinean regions, with the aim of establishing their relationships with PG. The mitochondr…
Genetic analysis and ethnic affinities from two Scytho‐Siberian skeletons
We extracted DNA from two skeletons belonging to the Sytho‐Siberian population, which were excavated from the Sebÿstei site (dating back 2,500 years) in the Altai Republic (Central Asia). Ancient DNA was analyzed by autosomal short tandem repeats (STRs) and by the sequencing of the hypervariable region 1 (HV1) of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region. The results showed that these two skeletons were not close relatives. Moreover, their hap…

Ancient DNA analysis of human neolithic remains found in northeastern Siberia
We successfully extracted DNA from a bone sample of a Neolithic skeleton (dated 3,600 +/- 60 years BP) excavated in northeastern Yakutia (east Siberia). Ancient DNA was analyzed by autosomal STRs (short tandem repeats) and by sequencing of the hypervariable region I (HV1) of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region. The STR profile, the mitochondrial haplotype, and the haplogroup determined were compared with those of modern Eurasian and Nati…
The man, the woman and the hyoid bone
A man and a woman were found in a double burial dating from the 1st century BC and located in a Xiongnu burial site in northern Mongolia. An offering box at the head of the man's coffin contained both remains of domestic animals and a human hyoid bone. The skeleton of the man was complete whereas the woman's hyoid bone was missing. The isolated hyoid bone could belong to the buried woman, which suggests the removal of her tongue and probably her …
Population origins in Mongolia
In the present study, nuclear (autosomal and Y-chromosome short tandem repeats) and mitochondrial (hypervariable region I) ancient DNA data previously obtained from a 2,300-year-old Xiongnu population of the Egyin Gol Valley (south of Lake Baikal in northern Mongolia) (Keyser-Tracqui et al. 2003 Am.
The site of Sindou is that of a Bronze Age collective burial place in a cave in the Quercy region. Study of the funerary practices reveals that this cave was used for secondary burials with the deposits undergoing multiple manipulations (in particular the removal of skulls) throughout the long duration of its sepulchral use. The fifty individuals represented cover all age groups except new-born infants. Kinship between several adults has been dem…

Multiple bone tuberculosis in a child from predynastic Upper Egypt (3200 BC)
Tuberculosis, one of the most ancient human diseases, was present in ancient Egypt and has been observed since predynastic times. Excavations in the predynastic to early dynastic necropolis of Adaima, Upper Egypt (3500-2700 BC) led to the discovery of a number of remarkably well-preserved skeletons of children. The skeletal remains of a 4.5-5-year-old child dated from Nagada III A2 (3200-3100 BC) displayed various lesions on the post-cranial skel…

Molecular Genetic Analysis of 400-Year-Old Human Remains Found in Two Yakut Burial Sites
The excavation of five frozen graves at the Sytygane Syhe and Istekh-Myrane burial sites (dated at 400 years old) in central Yakutia revealed five human skeletons belonging to the Yakut population. To investigate the origin and evolution of the Yakut population as well as the kinship system between individuals buried in these two sites, DNA was extracted from bone samples and analyzed by autosomal short tandem repeats (STRs) and by sequencing hyp…
Inhumation and cremation in medieval Mongolia
The authors study burials of the medieval period in western Mongolia shortly before emergence of Genghis Khan. They find that both inhumation and cremation are practised, with a variety of accompanying rituals. Systematic micro-analysis of bone fragments on the one hand, and the accounts of early travellers on the other, allow these researchers to propose detailed explanations of mortuary practice in thirteenth century Altai that will be highly s…

A rescue dig undertaken in 1985 led to the discovery of a cinerary urn with a relatively small amount of grave goods: a bronze ring, a tubular bronze bead, fragments of a gold ring. The technical characteristics and the alloy used for the artefact are well in keeping with the typological attribution to the « Rhine, Switzerland and Eastern France » Late Bronze Age. Examination of both the remains of the bones and the metal objects, in particular t…
