Evolution of the Late Holocene landslide-dammed Laguna Blanca, Subtropical Andes of Argentina (31°S)
Earliest evidence for the use of desert kite mass-hunting structures in southeastern Jordan during the late pre-pottery neolithic B
Desert kites – large-scale stone structures used for mass game hunting – are among the most extensive prehistoric constructions in the Middle East. Despite their ubiquity, the chronology of their emergence has long remained unresolved. This study presents the earliest direct and robust evidence for the construction and use of desert kites, based on integrated radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating of three kites from a sin…
Glaciations and landscape change in the Lower Aare Valley (Northern Switzerland) through the Middle Pleistocene
Throughout the Pleistocene, valley glaciers repeatedly advanced into the forelands of the European Alps. However, the corresponding geological record is highly fragmentary and the regional glaciation history, especially prior to the last glacial maximum, is still poorly documented. We explored the archives of the Lower Aare Valley in the confluence area of the Aare river with Reuss and Limmat, focusing on the overdeepened Gebenstorf-Stilli Trough…
Archaeology, chronology, and sedimentological context of the youngest Middle Palaeolithic assemblage from Jebel Faya, United Arab Emirates
Due to the scarcity of stratified and well-dated archaeological horizons, diachronic as well as spatial patterns of Pleistocene lithic traditions are not very well understood in Arabia. To contribute to this topic, we present new archaeological, sedimentological and chronological data from archaeological horizon II (AH II), the stratigraphically youngest Middle Palaeolithic assemblage at Jebel Faya, Emirate of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. Resul…
Limitations of precipitation reconstructions using equilibrium-line altitudes exemplified for former glaciers in the Southern Black Forest, Central Europe
To further elucidate the Late Pleistocene glacial history of mid-elevation mountainous regions in Central Europe, 10 Be cosmic-ray exposure (CRE) dating was applied to moraines in the Zastler Tal Valley in the Southern Black Forest. Periods of glacier recession from moraines in this valley began no later than 16 ka, 15 ka, and 13 ka. CRE ages of moraines in this and other parts of the Southern Black Forest cluster around 17–16 ka and 15–14 ka, th…
Late Holocene coastal dynamics south of the Chanthaburi estuary, eastern Gulf of Thailand
Beach ridges are depositional features that allow reconstruction of past sea-level variations, sediment dynamics, and storm activity. However, there are still very few systematic studies focusing on beach ridges available from the Gulf of Thailand. Along the east coast, satellite images provide evidence of beach ridges in the Chanthaburi Province, extending as far as 6 km inland, oriented parallel to the current coastline. These can be divided in…
Late glacial to Holocene fluvial dynamics in the Upper Rhine alluvial plain, France
High-resolution sedimentological and geochronological investigations of paleochannel systems in the Ried Central d'Alsace (northeastern France) allow for the reconstruction of the late glacial and Holocene fluvial evolution of this section of the Upper Rhine alluvial plain. During the Oldest Dryas, the landscape featured a dominant braided Rhine system and, to a lesser extent, a braided Fecht system. The shift to the Bølling-Allerød saw a narrowi…
Structure and age of ancient walls from the city of Nan, northern Thailand
The structure and age of remains of two ancient walls located in the city of Nan, a former part of the Lanna Kingdom in modern northern Thailand, were investigated. The remains differ in appearance with a well-preserved brick wall present at Mahawong Road (MHW), while an earthwork with a brick reinforcement core is found at Phaya Wat Temple (PWT). We employed an electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) survey and optically stimulated luminescence …
Paleoenvironmental changes in the eastern Kumtag Desert, northwestern China since the late Pleistocene
Sedimentary records from the Kumtag (also known as Kumtagh) Desert (KMD) in northwestern China are investigated to better understand Late Quaternary paleoenvironmental changes in this hyper-arid region. Presented here are the results of probably the first systematic survey of sedimentary sequences from the KMD, with the chronology determined by the optically stimulated luminescence dating. The variation of sedimentary facies, supported by granula…
Luminescence chronology of fluvial and aeolian deposits from the Emirate of Sharjah, UAE
Quaternary environments on the Arabian Peninsula shifted between pronounced arid conditions and phases of increased rainfall, which had a profound impact on Earth surface processes. However, while aeolian sediment dynamics are reasonably well understood, there is a lack of knowledge with regard to variability in the fluvial systems. Presented here are the findings from several locations within wadi drainage systems to the west of the Hajar Mounta…

Decline of Lanna ceramic group production in northern Thailand (Ban Bo Suak site) confined by radiocarbon and luminescence dating
The Lanna group is a traditional ceramic production style from Southeast Asia, with several kiln sites found distributed all over present northern Thailand. However, its origin and development are considered controversial and chronological constraints are scarce. Applied here are radiocarbon dating to charcoal remains and luminescence dating to ceramics, kiln wall material, and fluvial sediments from the Ban Bo Suak archaeological site near Nan, …

The Assessment of Radionuclide Distribution in Silex by Autoradiography in the Context of Dose Rate Determination for Thermoluminescence Dating
A combination of two autoradiography methods was applied to investigate the radionuclide distribution patterns in a range of different silices. We obtained greyscale images (β‐radiation) and α‐track patterns for qualitative assessment, and used a statistical approach to quantify the degree of uniformity of the radiation fields. It was found that almost all samples are poor in potassium, thorium and uranium, and that locally high concentrations ar…

Luminescence dating of historical fluvial deposits from the Danube and Ebro
The validity of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) has been tested on known‐age (historical) fluvial deposits along the rivers Danube (Austria) and Ebro (Spain). As partial bleaching of the OSL signal prior to deposition can interfere with correct age estimates, different approaches to extracting the dose accumulated during burial are compared. Using the finite mixture model gave OSL ages that are internally as well as stratigraphically cons…

Luminescence Dating of Sediments from the Luthern Valley, Central Switzerland, and Implications for the Chronology of the Last Glacial Cycle
The advancing glaciers of the last glacial maximum either eroded or deeply buried older sediments in the Swiss Alpine Foreland. However, part of the Swiss Plateau was not covered by ice and is therefore an excellent area for investigating climate and environmental change during the Upper Pleistocene. Repeated fluvial sequences can be studied in several pits along the Luthern Valley. The chronological framework is based on lithostratigraphy, polle…

Pleistocene glaciations of the northern Alpine Foreland
It is now well known that climate and environment are not stable over geological time and Alpine Quaternary stratigraphy has widely evolved since the first discussions on Pleistocene glaciations nearly two centuries ago. Originally, in the late 19th century, three and later four glacial periods were postulated but with more research it appears that several more cold phases and separate ice advances occurred. To solve the history of climate and en…

Reconstruction of a complex late Quaternary glacial landscape in the Cordillera de Cochabamba (Bolivia) based on a morphostratigraphic and multiple dating approach
Although glacial landscapes have previously been used for the reconstruction of late Quaternary glaciations in the Central Andes, only few data exist for the Eastern Cordillera in Bolivia. Here, we present results from detailed morphostratigraphic mapping and new data of surface exposure dating (SED), optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), and radiocarbon dating ( 14 C) from the Huara Loma Valley, Cordillera de Cochabamba (Bolivia). Discrepanci…
Late Quaternary lake-level changes of Lake El'gygytgyn, NE Siberia
Lake El'gygytgyn is situated in a 3.6 Ma old impact crater in northeastern Siberia. Presented here is a reconstruction of the Quaternary lake-level history as derived from sediment cores from the southern lake shelf. There, a cliff-like bench 10 m below the modern water level has been investigated. Deep-water sediments on the shelf indicate high lake levels during a warm Mid-Pleistocene period. One period with low lake level prior to Marine Oxyge…
