  • The emergence of authenticity

    Open Access•Jillian M Rickly, Jillian Rickly et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Tourism Research•2024•Citada por: 4•Referências: 99

Using the philosophy of critical realism, this article conceptualizes authenticity as a process of emergence to address the question: What makes authenticity possible? This envisions distinct authenticity phases, which are episodic, non-linear, and porous, accompanied by external triggers and internal processes that manifest before, during, and after travel, as perceived in relation to or activated by tourist experiences. Thus, pre-, proto-, in-s…

  • Let's get this show on the road! Introducing the tourist celebrity gaze

    Open Access•Brendan Canavan•ARTICLE•Annals of Tourism Research•2020•Citada por: 10•Referências: 49

The tourist celebrity gaze is identified and outlined in this article. A netnographic study of adventure backpackers' social media, documenting their taking part in the 2019 Mongol Rally, highlights a shift from touring places to being on tour. Hereby, the tourist may go travelling not only to observe, but to be observed by others. Symptomatic of this inverted gaze, distinctions from other travellers are drawn, making the tourist stand out, and a…

This article uses exploratory netnographic analysis of 12 generation Y backpackers on an extended joint holiday in order to better understand and represent a rapidly emerging but underrepresented cohort. • Displacement of Youth from the Isle of Man

    Open Access•Brendan Canavan•ARTICLE•Island Studies Journal•2011•Citada por: 1•Referências: 6

Small islands frequently suffer from population decline, especially of young people, putting continuity of community at risk. At the same time, their limited size can mean an intense competition for housing stock, particularly in scenic or economically successful islands which draw investors and migrants: a dynamic that fuels inflation. This paper investigates property inflation on the Isle of Man and its threat of displacing young inhabitants an…
