Teaching Critical Observation as a Sociological Tool

DURING MANY QUARTERS teaching an ethnographic field methods class, we noticed that undergraduates commonly have trouble linking macro structures to the micro interactions they observe in their fieldwork. Students are likely to draw hasty conclusions about the organizations and people with which they interact, using observations to support rather than critically examine their pre-existing beliefs.
