National Disability Insurance Scheme and Quality of Life Among Carers of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder in Australia
A Thematic Analysis

Diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder in Australia have increased considerably in recent years. The current study investigated how the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) impacts quality of life (QoL) among carers of children with autism spectrum disorder. Semi‐structured interviews were conducted with nine carers, all women, and data were analysed using thematic analysis. Findings revealed four themes: (1) Strain of the Deficit‐based Model, (2) Neglect of Carer and Family Needs, (3) Lack of Understanding and Experience Among NDIS Planners and (4) Gendered Carer Role Expectations, which consisted of five subthemes: (a) Professional Career Sacrifices, (b) Carer Isolation, (c) Income Loss, Care Costs and Financial Insecurity, (d) Marital Strain and (e) Cumulative Strain of Constant Care. Themes reflected participants' psychological, environmental and social experiences of QoL. Findings inform how disability policies can be extended to better support carers of children with autism spectrum disorder and their families
