The papers by Hans Mauksch and Paul Baker are in some ways quite different, yet both have striking parallels and points of congruence. Mauksch makes two principal, interrelated points. First, to understand the pervasive devaluation of teaching in American higher education, we must understand the cultural and institutional contexts in which teaching is performed. Second, the increasing bureaucratization of higher education and the centralization of decision making has altered the standards of professional quality, the institution's expectations of faculty, faculty reward structures, and the internal fabric of the professoriate. This change has threatened the teaching role even further
