It is generally accepted, though seldom demonstrated, that traditional craftsmen of the medieval and early modern periods used geometrical methods to design and set out their buildings. Close analysis of the outstanding timber-framed porch at Old Impton (Radnorshire) reveals a mid-sixteenth-century carpenter using a comprehensive repertoire of geometries, designed to impress observers but simultaneously speaking a sophisticated spatial language to those who understood its cyphers, symbols and modules
