Unstructured Process Groups in Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy Training

A Critical Review and an Educational Alternative

Education or training in transactional analysis (TA) comprises three elements: training, usually in the form of a specific, organized training course or program; supervised practice in one of the four fields of application or specialization; and personal growth, both in and during as well as outside the formal training program. Personal growth during such education/training, especially in the fields of psychotherapy and counseling, usually takes the form of unstructured, reflective process groups. However, although these are relatively common, the purpose and role of such groups are rarely discussed, theorized about, or critiqued. This article addresses this gap, first, by discussing this element of education/training in TA and reviewing the relatively small literature on this subject. The article then considers the purpose of such groups in an educational/training context, also drawing on literature outside of TA and, focusing specifically on psychotherapy training, what the authors identify as a certain discounting in training. Finally, the article offers an alternative model of facilitating adult/Adult processing in students/trainees that activates physis and builds resilience
