This article examines the mechanisms of dissociation of self that can result in multiple personality disorder (MPD). A review of the literature dealing with the etiology and mechanisms resulting in multiple dissociated selves is included, as well as a TA perspective on the subject. Two case examples are presented, and certain assumptions of TA theory are examined in light of these and other cases cited in the literature
