This paper is based on a preliminary study of the production of English monophthongs by a group of speakers from mainland China based on age and gender. We examined 23 speakers, stratified by age and gender. The speakers were recorded reading words with 19 vowels embedded in an /hVd/ stressed syllable context. The findings show that vowel conflation, a more compressed vowel space and an absence of durational contrast were more evident in the younger age group. Additionally, females tended to produce their vowels lower and more fronted. Overall, variation was observed across the speakers, suggesting that the pronunciation of CE vowels is not consistent among speakers
