Chippewa Adolescents

In recent years students of cultural change have placed increasing emphasis on different levels of acculturation within communities in contact situations.1 These differences are a result of varying rates of change in the past, and are potentially important determinants of future change. They assume greater significance as acculturation proceeds and as certain groups become the vanguard of further change. Since many American Indian tribes have experienced over a century of continuing pressure for change, it is useful to examine the resulting levels of acculturation in order to assess the determinants and anticipate some of the consequences
