Who Thinks Who's in Charge Here

Perceptual data obtained from a large sample of colleges and universities are used to investigate faculty views on influence and power in three areas of institutional decision-making-educational policy, recruitment, andfinance. The data suggest that influence is perceived to be diffuse in educational policy and recruitment: senior faculty and department chairmen are seen to exert a great deal of influence in these areas, but not at the expense 'of administrators or trustees. These and other perceptions, however, appear to be affected by the institutional setting and the respondent's own rank and sex
