This paper explores Boccaccio's use of female community as a positive force in the Decameron, indicating the benefits women obtain by fostering positive relationships with one another in the cornice and across a range of novelle. Gender relations in this text are the subject of some of the most compelling of its one hundred stories, as male and female characters engage in battles for supremacy. Harder to recognize are the dynamics within these clashes whereby women support each other, almost clandestinely, but recurrently. I posit that this community, largely unacknowledged in Decameron scholarship, protects its members from harm and helps them to achieve their goals. There is very little woman-woman antagonism as a range of often-anonymous women assist female protagonists who, as a result, attain a greater degree of agency over their own lives
