Toward a Factorial Ecology of Flows

Examinations of the structure and pattern of transport flows and networks have been a major research focus of transportation geographers for several decades [4]. A sector of this research area is concerned with the development of methodologies capable of reducing sets of interregional flows into basic patterns or flow components. Dyadic factor analysis is such a methodology.1 This type of factor analysis has been developed and applied to interregional commodity flows by Berry [1, 2] within the larger context of a general field theory of spatial behavior. However, it does not appear that this research approach has advanced much beyond that initial application. The purpose of the present paper is to evaluate the utility of dyadic factor analysis for the parsimonious description of interregional commodity flow patterns. Whether there is any a priori manner of determining the number of significant factors which will result in such studies
