HENRI ESTIENNE, great printer who entertained Margaret of Navarre and chief scholars of France at his bookshop, and thought little of keeping Francis I waiting while he finished a proof sheet, deemed it fitting to inscribe on title-page of a work of Buchanan's explanation, poetarum sui saeculifacile princeps. The fame of the celebrated Buchanan did not wane for over two centuries-for as long, in fact, as Europe knew Latin and could appreciate Latin poetry-as is clear from a passage taken from Boswell's Life of Johnson, at year 1783
