The Rgaybat tribal confederation of the Western Sahara region is the largest tribal group there. Despite their description of themselves as khamsa‐khmas there are actually many more clans than five and the confederation is basically split into two fractions. Although both claim a sharifian descent and Arab origins, there is significant evidence to show that at least one fraction has a clear Berber linguistic and social component and the typical Berber institution of Ait Arba'in also existed in the federation. The confederation was the largest tribal group of camel nomads in the Western Sahara region, spilling over its edges into other countries as part of its migration patterns, until the war between Morocco and the Polisario Front. This ethnographic study dates from before this time, which began in 1975
