Charting the Plantation Landscape from Natchez to New Orleans

This collection of essays about the plantations that have lined the banks of the lower Mississippi River from colonial times through the present aspires to make, quoting the editor, “material normally reserved for academic discussions accessible to the general reader” (p. 9). The well-known Norman's Chart of the Lower Mississippi River (1858) by Marie Adrien Persac is the leitmotiv that graces the book jacket and reappears, to greater or lesser degree, in each chapter. Other than the brief introduction and even briefer epilogue, the seven substantive chapters cover an appropriately broad range of topics focused on the place and period, from plantation architectures, landscapes, and visual representations through the medical practices and politics of the owners, enslaved, and emancipated. The final chapter, an environmental history of the Uncle Sam plantation, by Christopher Morris, captures the intended scope of the volume by providing a particularly compelling account of the plantation's landscape history from precolonial and colonial times through the antebellum era, Reconstruction, and conversion to a fertilizer plant in the twentieth century
