Mapping ancient hunting installations on the Ustyurt Plateau, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan

Hunting installations have been known in the Aralo-Caspian region since the mid-20th century. An extensive study of many of these, based on archaeological survey and excavation, was published by V. Yagodin in 1991 when the Ustyurt Plateau lay within the Soviet Union. Since that time, this highly inaccessible region has been subdivided along national boundaries, but the advent of widely available satellite imagery has provided a new and important research tool making remote study a practical reality. This paper reports on previously unrecorded structures in North East Ustyurt using remote sensing imagery and discusses new interpretations made possible by the extent of currently available data
