A much neglected stumbling-block in interpreting factor analytical results is the indeterminacy of factors and factor scores. The Guttman criterion is presented as a standard to judge whether in a given case this is so serious a drawback as to prohibit justified interpretation. The criterion is illustrated with some examples from geography. The technique under discussion is factor analysis in a strict sense, as opposed to principal component analysis
